Glow from a Window in a Morning Fog
Island Lake
North of Duluth, Minnesota

A couple days back Isabela Sorescu (isabela_sor) shared a story and this photo of getting out to capture the sunrise only to find it obscured by fog. I wrote in my comments on her image that I had gone through a similar situation recently .. and so here is my image.

I arrived at my favorite shooting location on a small bridge near the center of Island lake at around 4:45 am .. a bit more than a half hour before sunrise .. The half hour drive up through the woods and bogs had been misty and foggy .. but it always is .. literally just before I arrived at the lake I entered this thick cloud .. it chased me onto the lake as I parked and set up my tripod .. Sadly I watched the inexorable conclusion of my sunrise shooting as this cloud enveloped the entirety of the still lake .. I shot this right at the top of the hour .. about 15 minutes before "sunrise" .. I then gave up .. packed my self up and shot up to the next lake North .. Boulder Lake ..

This image is a stereotypical Northern Minnesota scene ... thick forest pocked with thousands upon thousands of lakes ... and cabins. The Twin Cities (Minneapolis and St. Paul) are about 3 hours south ...

My brother lives in the cities and if I journey down to see him on the weekend I feel like I am in a scene from some disaster movie .. the lone car heading south into the cities as the Northbound lanes are clogged with thick "stop and go" traffic. I expect to arrive in an empty metropolis with tumbleweeds blowing across the dusty streets .. It seems like everybody in the cities heads up North to a cabin somewhere on one of the infinitely many lakes in the woods.

Just like your previous work you have demonstrated that the weather you hoped for didn't prevent you from coming away with a creditable image. The mist has created a surreal atmosphere making the land jutting into the lake appear to be floating in the air. The light in the cabin is welcoming. Well done

Foggy and misty weather can be very good for photography, like in here. It always adds a feeling of mystery and suspense as in the movies. I love it. Well done.

Hi John,
Beuatiful mysty morning light, I love it, it so pure, peaceful, and tranquil setting, like an opening scene of a movie. Great depth, the different shade of color and value on the tree shows it depth and distance. That little warm glow out of the window draw our vision to the charming and rustic house, situated in such a natural environment. love the pastel quality and the soft texture of the overall iamge. Excellent work, my complements.

Mysterious, moody & beautifully composed! Like how the framing has been done with the island on the right, the light coming out from one of the cottage windows. What are the small bridge like structures? they add a lot to the compo. as if they are bridges to the fog. I can feel the chill here, but wow, what a mood! Excellent!

Hello John,

Magic environment on this photograph, I like much. The use of the long exposure is judiciously used here to give all poetry to the place. The light which crosses the tree is appreciable in the image. Very beautiful photograph and superb reflections, thank you John.

What an atmosphere you have here! I just lov ethe way the sky gets mixed with the water, the little bridge, the reflection on the water, the effect of the fog and especially the light in the wooden house.Very well captured!
