Photographer’s Note
At Huntington Street and Pacific Coast Highway, this fairly new bronze sculpture of a surfer on a wave by artist Edmond Schumpert sits across the street from the 31-acre Pacific City resort development under construction. Many people aren't happy about the development, however. It is somewhat out of place with the rest of the coast, in that Huntington's definitely lost its quirky, seaside charm in favor of upscale shops and developments intended to bring in more revenue. Many buildings that dated to the 1920s had to be demolished. Some of the art is cool, as is shown in the photo, but locals aren't convinced yet. I'm not sure I am either; I remember the place as a child and now seeing it as an adult with more urban sprawl and million dollar homes packed tightly in behind the wetlands is something of an eyesore...
