Photographers Note
THE VISIBLE SPECTRUM
Niagara Falls, on the border between the United States and Canada, is in reality three separate falls American, Bridal Veil, and the massive Canadian or "Horseshoe Falls." Each minute 5720 cubic-meters of water pours over the 70 m (180 ft) high edge, not counting a volume three times as large that is diverted to drive hydroelectric generators. In the United States there are much higher waterfalls, e.g. at Yosemite Park (total height 740 m or 2425 ft), but none has the flow rate of the Niagara. Also in contrast to the Niagara, the much larger Victoria Falls in Africa features fifteen separate falls, with a peak flow of 425,000 cubic-meters per minute. Finally, there is the more majestic Iguassu in South America, on the border of Argentina and Brazil, pouring 380,000 cubic-meters per minute (or 18 times more than does Niagara Falls). An extraordinarily beautiful photograph of the Iguassu was posted by bwj as Devils Throat three months ago. Nonetheless, the Niagara, hosting as many as 20 million visitors annually, is arguably the most famous of all waterfalls in the world.
This past week I visited the area around the City of Buffalo in New York State, ostensibly to give a talk at the State University of New York in Fredonia, and a friend from Fredonia was gracious enough to drive me to the storied falls. In shooting the photograph, I stood near the edge of the American Falls, where the water pouring into a seemingly bottomless pit produced the spray, and light rays dispersing through the water droplets in the spray created the rainbow. The colors range from the longer wavelength reddish glow in the upper bands, changing gradually to turquoise in the middle bands, and finally the shorter wavelength violet in the lower. (These colors represent just the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum.) For the reader with a technical mind, a rainbow is a composite effect of rays of white light striking numberless spherical droplets of water and becoming dispersed. Light rays are refracted twice (across the outer surface of a droplet as they enter and leave the droplet), and reflected once (at a diametrically opposite area in the inner surface). Ultimately, it is the composite image the eye receives from multiple droplets that reveals the bands of colors. A simple diagram in the following link may be helpful in understanding the foregoing explanation.
In this image, shot with a Nikon D200, the falls themselves are not visible (they are off to the left of the cliff). But exactly twenty-two years ago in late April 1987, I had taken a photograph from almost the same vantage point with another good camera, a non-digital Nikon F, where the Edge of the falls was featured. In the present photo it is the flock of seagulls dancing in the mist that I sought to capture. A lone seagull flying below the rainbow made this the best of half-a-dozen images that I shot. What appears in the background in this photo is neither the falls, nor noise, but that all-pervasive mist.
PS. I changed the title of this image from "a visible spectrum" to "a footbridge between cliffs," after reading the clever metaphor by Diane Chesnel (clio). Many thanks Diane.

Hi Bulent, As always very interesting note! I was in many interesting places but up to now I have never seen a really big waterfall. I must to go somewhere- Iguacu, or Niagara, or Victoria... I was looking forward to see the high waterfalls in Yosemite but September is not a good time - there were dry. Nice sharp view of the rainbow. It seems that in the left upper corner could be the secondary one. Wonderful colour of water and seagull looks also very nice.

Hi Bulent,
Splendid picture! What a composition! It seems that the rainbow is opening a safe way for the seagull, keeping it free from the storm. It is in the first rank of photography, certainly!
Bravo!

Hello Dear Professor,
lovely capture of the falls and the mist with the rainbow smartly placed in diagonal so that we can really appreciate the spectrum. The colors really registered well, the mist and the seagull not only build a moody setting, but also direct the eye nicely to the main attraction in the right area of your frame. A very powerful picture and engaging note, as always.
All the best.

A good capture of this rainbow high above the swirling waters. Interesting textural and tonal contrasts on either side of the rainbow. The soaring bird is nicely placed and is a definite bonus.

Good morning dear Bulent
Really amazing! A photographer's dream to catch a good rainbow and you did it really well. Together with the Niagara FAlls it becomes even more meaningful as the place is really great. I was there walking up and down the American Fall edge in the summer of 69 when they had cut off the water to repair it. If I find a capture from that time I will post it.

Hello, dear Bulent!
The flying seagull is a beautiful "bonus" but the eye goes straight to that universal sign of hope, this beautiful rainbow. It looks like a "private" one, a rainbow just for you and I wish that it means good luck for all your future plans! Great tight framing, excellent composition, fantastic colours! Congratulations!
Warm regards,

Merhaba, Bulent -
Very interesting and informative note. Not to mention the physics lesson! I think that one reason Niagra is more popular than those other, more spectacular falls, is that it is far more accessible. In addition to the ones you mentioned, there is also Angel Falls - the highest in the world, and possibly the hardest to get to.
The photo itself is a really neat interpretation, a nice change from the obvious showing of the falls themselves; here it focuses our attention on the effects - of which the seagull is one, as are the mists and the churning waters. Somehow you persuaded it to position itself in great balance against the rocks to the left. The rainbow itself makes a very nice curve leading the eye through the scene, while the grasses in the fg frame the whole thing.
A great job!
Best,
Dan
PS: Thanks for the notes on Venice; they will be very useful. Also, to answer your question, I was in Israel, including J'lem, but that was 1971. I have some hopes my photographic skills have improved since then.

Bonsoir, cher ami Bulent,
L'âme n'aurait pas d'arc-en-ciel, si les yeux n'avaient pas de larmes.

Wonderful job of light management here getting a crystal clear noiseless view of the vivid rainbow.
The seagull in full flight lends effective scale to this fine image and the backdrop testifies to the tremendous volume of water that comes tumbling over these falls.

hello Bulent,
I remember the rainbows of Niagara, and I have to admit that since all the merchandise stands, 3D theaters and what not totally blocked my view on the falls, rainbows is what I remember best :)
I think I would have cropped from the bottom and from the left to have a square frame and more abstract shot that would focus attention on the diagonal of the rainbow and seagull. but that's a personal preference :)
thanks for the informative note, always an interesting read.
best,
Kristine

Hello Bulent
The spectrum of light, the rainbow, is always a delight to see and to photograph. I remember in elementary school I learned the order of Isaac Newton's seven colors of the spectrum by remembering "Roy G. Biv" (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet). You have explained beautifully in your note why the rainbow occurs. Your composition at Niagara Falls is exquisite. I like it very much.
Kind regards,
Betty

hi Bulent
It seems the waterfall areas always yield the spectrum of rainbow colors when diffraction of light passes through the mist of water. I had seen and captured it myself.
But I think this is incredible capture of such a wide span of the fall or gorge that still gives you such impressive rainbow strip of colors.
Well done.

Hello Bulent,
A true "Batalayade", in the better sense of the word just invented. :D That means a well thought image in every detail, very pleasant to the eye, accompanied by a thoughtful, very well written note that teaches us or makes us think about something interesting.
It's a great image, with the rainbow very clear, standing up against the haze. I guess it didn't need the presence of the bird to be very good, but it is certainly a good bonus.
Warm regards,
José

Again my friend, you managed to get a very surprising shot of those majestic falls. The inclusion of the gull is either a stroke of genius or the luck of the devil ;)
Great composition with an exposure that's not easy to manage, the inclusion of the tiny gull on the ledge on the left (is that snow?) does asdd some more nice sense of the majestic scale of it all.
Again, you took advantage of a long lens to show a great detail instead of the obvious waterfall with it's all too pervasive wall of hotels & casinos leaning from the Ontario side.
Great shot!

A beautiful capture of the rainbow Bulent, but you know what? I think the photo would have been even better if you'd framed it a bit tighter to exclude the scrappy vegetation along the bottom and on the left. Personally I'd crop those areas.
All that's needed is the rainbow, the bird and the water and cliffs behind. Personally I'd crop those areas.
Still, it's very different to all the other more conventional shots of Niagara falls that I've seen, and all the better for it.
Cheers,
Ben

Merhaba Hocam,
Hem gökkuşağını, hem de altından geçen kuşu çok iyi yakalamışsınız. Sonuç harika olmuş.

A beautifull rainbow near the falls, with the seagull it looks very much like a view from some cliffs overhanging the sea. I also like the blue-green color of the water.
All the best,
Emmanuel

hi Bulent,
I hope this note finds you and yours well.
Wondrous image .. the rainbow .. the bird .. the atmosphere .. the tone of the water is perfect, beautiful and just subdued enough to let the rest of the image speak.
take care,
John
