Photographer’s Note

If we want to do some photography when traveling with the whole family, sometimes we have to escape. And I did it after midnight in San Francisco, when I left the family sleeping in the hotel to do some photos keeping one eye in the viewfinder and three or four looking around to the lonely streets. ;-D

This is a view from San Francisco, crossing the San Francisco Bay via Yearba Buena Island.

About the Bay Bridge: (from wikipedia)

The San Francisco – Oakland Bay Bridge (legally The James "Sunny Jim" Rolph Bridge and known locally as the Bay Bridge) is a multi-structure toll bridge complex that spans San Francisco Bay and links the California cities of Oakland and San Francisco in the United States, as part of Interstate 80. It carries approximately 270,000 vehicles per day. It has one of the longest spans in the world and is one of the seven engineering wonders of the modern world. West: two main spans 2,310 feet 700 m)and East: one main span 1,400 feet(430 m). The total lengh is 9,260 feet(2,820 m)to the West and 10,176 feet(3,102 m)to the East, resulting the total of 3.68 miles(5.92 km). The clearance below is 220 feet(67 m)at West and 191 feet (58 m)at East. There are 10 lanes (5 westbound on upper level, 5 eastbound on lower) of I-80.

A well worth get away, I guess when travelling with group or family that doesn't like to waste too much time waiting for you to get just the right POV or moment it can be tiresome, I can understand yet it hard to resist. This is a great night shot of the bay bridge, I did a couple but none came out this good. I love the reflection in the water, the dark of the sky, so deep, Really fantastic job. Congrats.

Good Evening Jose. I know the camera and lens you used because I have the exact same. The wide reach of the 10-22 allows a very wide sweeping view as you have captured here. The night lighting is very nice and the reflection is simply superb. Lovely shot to say the least.

Un superbe cliché nocturne de ce célèbre pont bien cadré avec une lumière bien maitrisée. Lorsque je suis venue le voir il était dans le brouillard comme souvent parait-il.

cara, creio que nunca tinha visto uma imagem da Golden Gate à noite e por esse ângulo. Os reflexos das luzes douradas sobre a água são, sem dúvida, a grande atração, depois da própria ponte. Beleza de imagem!

Zeca,
boa escolha em deixar a familia 'em casa' para tirar umas fotos noturnas de SF. Gostei tambem da sua escolha Bay Bridge x Golden Gate que e bem mais badalada. Uma das diferencas mais marcantes entre as duas e a cor. Durante o dia uma e cinza e a outra vermelha e durante a noite a cinza se torna dourada e a vermelha continua vermelha.
A sua composicao inclue bem as luzes de Oakland e da ilha Yerba Buena. muito bom esse detalhe de inclusao que permite uma sensacao de profundidade adicional ao elemento diagonal da ponte.
Conheco esse pedacinho bem demais. E ai, voce tambem viu o arco de Cupido?

fantastic shot, Zeca, I like a lot how the golden glow on the water makes it look like a melted amber, while the lights on the bridge remind of a delicate necklace against a black velvet background. superb clarity, I can almost see the water shimmer. excellent work, my compliments.

Olá Zeca, excelente foto nocturna da famosa ponte. Deste ponto de vista e com esta luz, quase que podia ser confundida com a ponte sobre o Tejo em Lisboa. Exposição óptima e reflexos lindíssimos. Isso é que é coragem e vontade de fazer fotos...é de facto muito mais difícil fazer fotos boas sempre que viajo, pois estou sempre acompanhado por quem não quer saber de fotografia e não está para esperar.

ah, the Bay bridge. It`s so nice to see that not everybody only photographs the Golden Gate! I really like this one, it was definetly worth to go out and shoot some images while your family was sleeping. I normally prefer blue hour shots, but here it looks great with the black sky, it makes the reflecting lights of the bridge stand out even more. Good job with the exposure, great compo and sharpness, a wonderful one!

me gusta mucho la perspectiva en diagonal de este maravilloso Puente de la Bahía de San Francisco, y evidentemente, cómo has captado su espectacular iluminación en una excelente toma nocturna, con gran calidad en la luz y los colores.
Los reflejos sobre el agua tranquila y las nubes en el cielo oscuro añaden más interés y belleza a tu composición.

Olá Zeca,

Vejo que andaste pela Gringolândia e, apesar da família, conseguiste exercitar os teu já conhecidos dotes para estas vistas nocturnas com compos e nitidez magníficas. Conseguiste captar muito bem a elegância dessa ponte bem menos famosa do que a sua prima do Golden Gate, mais os reflexos deslumbrantes sobre a água.

Como eu te compreendo em relação à família! Eu tb. estou sempre a ver se consigo dar umas escapadelas fotográficas por minha conta. Curiosamente, mas tb. compreensivelmente, acaba por ser muito mais fácil em férias "de estadia", tipo praia, do que em viagens propriamente ditas, pois é mais fácil conseguir ouvir coisas como "não te importas que eu não vá, pois não? É que está tanto calor", ou "estou com muita preguiça", "prefiro ficar na piscina ou na praia", etc.

This view hold a special interest for me. A very long time ago, I was a post-doc at the University of California-Berkeley, just across the Bay Bridge seen here. Hi, Jose. The bridge stands out very well against the dark night. the contrast between the orange tones and the dark water and sky works very well. Nice diagonal line of the bridge crossing the whole picture.
