LIGHT SURROUNDING THE TUNNEL I
Three months ago I had posted a photograph shot from virtually the same vantage point, Light at the End of the Tunnel. In that image the 60 meter (200 foot) long tunnel connecting the East and West Buildings of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, was presented with the walls of the tunnel in subdued light, and the end of the tunnel in brilliant sunlight. There the narrow parallel slats created an effective demonstration of one-point perspective. That image is well worth seeing as a counterpoint to the present photo. Recently, a light show designed by Leo Villareal, an artist from New York, was unveiled, completely inverting the light conditions depicted in that earlier image the light areas becoming dark, and the dark becoming light. In Villareals work, "MULTIVERSE," the passageway glitters with 41,000 light-emitting diodes (LED), inserted into the channels between its aluminum slats, creating a mesmerizing light show. The ever-changing pattern of lights are meant to mimic the universe (or still better multi-universes). The lights turn on and off in a choreographed manner, and create a swirling waves across the surface, and a suggestion of twinkling stars, rushing water and bouncing polka dots. What becomes clear in watching the patterns, however, is the random order in the patterns. The light show is scheduled to be on display through 2009.
I had my pocket camera on hand when I shot this image, steadying the camera on a post bearing a sign. Nikon Coolpix S600.

Very original and well done image. Lights handling and quality are perfect. I like it.
Best regards Bulent.
PaulVDV (31959) 2009-01-17 12:46
Indeed all these lights create the impression that you aren't anymore in a tunnel but in a much bigger space and also a bit the feeling of being very tiny in the big universe.
You've choosen the best POV; at the wall to the right side there aren't any lights.
Best regards, Paul
pilpel-adom (3018) 2009-01-17 12:49
I like the perspective of the tunnel, the bright leds and the men at the distance that make a good proportion for the whole scene...

Hi Bulent. Great shot; artistic and original. I like the tunnel effect and the depth created.
feather (51130) 2009-01-17 13:37
It must be a stunning sight to see this in reality. The perspective is the key to the enjoyment of the image as we almost feel sucked inwards. Excellent quality from your little compact!

Merhaba, Bulent -
This is a fantastic shot, pocket camera or no. Superbly positioned, the lights forming diagonals sending the eye to the distant point of light where man and energy meet. And I have no doubt that you waited for the people on the slideway to reach that exact point.
jjcordier (79297) 2009-01-17 23:02

Tebrikler, ailenizle birlikte iyi pazarlar.
snunney (105645) 2009-01-18 1:43
A fascinating composition that could be out of a scene in a sci-fi movie. The pins of light with their cool blue tones have a mesmerizing effect. The depth and clarity are superb. Not an every day image. Thanks for sharing. The note is a useful adjunct.

I think I prefer this one to your previous because of its stronger compositional element.A composition of quarters, its good to break rules!.
Dpbours (222) 2009-01-18 2:28
That is an outstanding result with that camera!
And an interesting artistical vision on the inverting the light. It works for sure when comparing the two shots. Nice one!
belido (19934) 2009-01-18 3:14
fantastic perspective. It's inevitable to follow the tunnel until we get the persons at the end. Very beautiful graphism, well done!

Hello friend Bulent,
What you show here is extraordinarily, what a perspective, through the a lot different lamp points inside the tunnel.
This see I not everyday on TE, this wonderful and very technical picture, also very attractive.
Sharpness and clarity are superb, excellent panorama view.
Composition and presentation are very well.
papagolf21 (108197) 2009-01-18 14:52
Bonsoir, mon ami Bulent,

Ciao dear friend,
amazing visual effect, almost hypnotic, caused by the convergence of the bright lines. This is a very beautiful photo, that confirmation your cleverness and yours excellent photographic technique. I immediately put it among my preferred photos. Sincere compliment! Have a nice week
PS: I know that you live in America, and that Italy is very distant, but on April 4 I have organized a meeting TE in Venice. In my Intro you can find the link of the program with the details. If you have the possibility to come in Europe in that period, I would be very happy to meet you.

Wonderful light mangement and striking depth to this modern scene.
Beautiful lines and textures created by these tiny blue lights.
Reminds me of a MRI machine that I was once stuck in for an hour.
Things will be very busy in your neck of the woods this week.

This version with the lights on is very appealing and created a great visual/graphical impact! Fantastic perspective... people in the far gave a sense of distance.

lraew (42) 2009-01-19 8:54
A most interesting perspective. The clarity of the lighting is razor sharp and the focus it creates is very interesting. I would like to see the light show it all its complexity.
When it comes to Nikon - great things still come in even the smallest of packages!
kiks (12759) 2009-01-19 10:58
Fantastic use of the architectural lines you made here. Love the grafic effect and reflections. NOt easy to manage the light but you did it perfectly.

How did I miss this fabulous image... I can't explain that ;o)
You've done such a great work to bring the lines out for a graphical and strong result.
The way you've framed is perfect to propel us into the heart of this futuristic tunnel.
Incredible shot. I think it's one of my favourites since several weeks !
photoray (13981) 2009-01-19 19:29
Very good "mystery tour" in blue going to the end and the curves and straight lines add to it. Congratulations.
phwall (6785) 2009-01-20 4:04
I remember your earlier shot well, this shot is even more graphic than the last. What a brilliant light show Leo Villareal has designed, and you have captured it perfectly.
Wonderful depth and clarity. Ah, the value of a previous location survey.
BWJ (3094) 2009-01-20 15:11
This is a striking image of Leo Villareal's light sculpture in the tunnel at the National Gallery. Your note about it is fascinating! My compliments to you.
buscape (6219) 2009-01-20 17:33
great shot with beautiful graphical effect of 41,000 LEDs. Very well seen and perfectly done.
Your POV for this picture is really great. I like it very much.
Yar (793) 2009-01-20 18:01
you showed this construction very technically. the view is just fantastic with this perspective. and I also note the framing, which perfectly outlines the image.

Hi Bulent, Your Nikon Coolpix 600 does a remarkable job in your hands. A most creative POV with excellent outcome. I like this very much. TFS. Murray.
PS Good to see your Washington site (moon as bubble reference) for the incoming President today.
Angshu (56760) 2009-01-21 0:25
Dear Professor 'A'
I certainly remember you earlier post of the tunnel & what a contrast. Apart from the excellent perspective, what I like is the C shaped exit at the end, which was not highlighted in your earlier post. There's an effect of a vortex here as the viewer is sucked in to the end of the tunnel. With these lights glittering, it must be a scene to watch. Good work!
With Warm regards
trekks (14348) 2009-01-21 2:41
Very impressive graphic view of the tunnel from your POV selection here. Purely showing the light+shadow effect in a best way. The lines of light is quite effective here to lead the eye to the end.

Demonstration that great pictures do not need great cameras. The photographer is important.
Your note are incredibly detailed and interesting.

I rememebre the other one and this one is also very good. I like the effect created by the lights along the tunnel and those people in background. Very good composition and good light!
Docarmo (9767) 2009-01-23 20:56
I have to take your words here: "This is a beautifully conceived shot"! You used lights of the tunnel artistically! It may have a fantastic meaning, which is - we can find light not only at the end of the tunnel - it is a matter of point of view ;-)
JCG (35129) 2009-01-24 5:48
This small compact Nikon offers a beautiful quality of image and emphasizes this futuristic tunnel well. I like much all these small blue lights which accentuate the prospect. A finely managed ambient light. Reassuring for the claustrophobics people !!! Good glance Bülent, cheer.
With all my friendships and a very good WE,
woozbman (368) 2009-01-24 13:53

intriguing pov & excellent dof
really impressive view reminds a lot the time tunnel through which we can "travel" to next generations (following always sci fi films)!!!

Hi Bulent, What great prospective & magnificent light, I have not been on TE for a while but this photo was worth coming back for, you really have managed it beautifully, kind regards Wilson.
stego (24132) 2009-01-27 14:25
I did a pause of a few days and this marvel already got 114 deserved points... Not really a surprise, because it is really so attractive. The sense of perspective produced by the tunnel itself and wonderfully enhanced by the tiny lights is stunning. One has the sensation of being in the front of a futurist subway train. The compo is great and the the exposure is spotlessly done. That little gadget of yours seems to beat much high end DSLR's.
Warm regards, José.
gervaso (16599) 2009-01-29 3:30
Wonderful tunnel captured here! Interesting how we see it different everytime we look at the picture, in a kind of graphical effect! The framing and sharpness are great! Well done!

great image, I like a lot this spectacular perspective. Good exosure management.
alvaraalto (19782) 2009-02-01 8:16
You choice here the right POV to surprise us with this strong artistic image.
I like the eccentric place of the centre of the tunnel at the right side which gives us many blue light lines leading to that point.
faubry (35447) 2009-02-02 15:05
wonderful light and perspective, like surnatural scène...
avene (12675) 2009-02-02 21:00
as in the other photo you mention, perspective has a very important role here, and I find the feeling of an endless tunnel fits very well with the concept of multi-universes. I like a lot the futuristic feeling of the cool colours of the lights arranged with military precision, but with enough random elements to prevent the scene from becoming monotonous. and I'm very impressed with the quality, didn't expect such a noise-free photo from a compact camera in low light. nice, very nice :)
alainh (33205) 2009-02-03 21:06
astonishing and succesfull picture ! it' s another world, a technologic, metallic, mysterious planet ! well managed and the best angle.

emjleclercq (15780) 2009-02-07 13:31
Excellent perpective with the rows of light converging toward the opening of the tunnel. And the blue-grey color is very pleasant.
All the best,
MarcT (20964) 2009-02-07 23:38
Superb perspective and excellent light even in that low light environnement.
papera (14320) 2009-02-08 5:37
if the real thing is even 0,5% as impressive as your photo, I really think I could have lost myself in it... =)
truly beautiful for me, who love light and its different temperatures and changes.
the off-centre end of the tunnel emphasizes the LEDs perfectly.
really a good shot.
devimeuxbe (58557) 2009-02-17 14:18
what a strange impression to be in this tube of colors. Sharpenss is perfect. Very good idea of cropping. It's very well done

Hello my friend,
what great perspective and depth you've created in this fine image and the shaprness is spot on. Aren't the modern compacts wonderful? A superb capture Bulent, it feels like it's sucking me in.

worldcitizen (9314) 2009-02-26 10:30
This image has already garnered a lot of attention - and deservedly so! The POV and execution are wonderful! We are taken right into this space, and surrounded on almost all sides. The DOF almost makes it seem as though the rows of light are moving towards us, creating an effect of opposite momentum in the tunnel. Really nice!
PJE (20758) 2009-03-02 20:42
Hello Bulent. I must say this capture of the tunnel has a very powerful impact in this frame. Excellent work to say the least. Thanks for sharing!

it does not take too much, just a creative mind and the result can be outstanding. The idea here is simply fantastic and your talented observing eye captured it perfectly. The space just draws us in...like being hypnotized and swallowed by spaceous vortex of lights due to accented perspective. This tunnel now breathes. It has a volume, yes, universe feeling to it and it makes one stay in it admiring wonderful effects so perfectly displayed. I know I would spend here some time for sure. :)
Excellently seen and presented,

even after a year i look into your gallery you still take time out to make great images..photos..stories..inspiring !
This one..well what can one say..youve nailed it with your coolpix..the intorduction of the lights from the edge way deep into the compo..impressive..the human element was much required and yet not distracting...
Goo graphic and visual appeal..enjoyed it

Sevgili eşiniz Carol Jean'a çok selamlar.Saygı ve sevgilerimle
PS.tüneldeki kendi çekimlerim WS ta

This photo certainly shows that little compact cameras can do a very good job in the hands of a skilled operator with a great imagination. Tfs, Marlene

Excellent effect in the tunnel captured perfectly. It looks really great and DOF is at its best. Fine color hues and sharpness. Well done
Thanks for your critique of my rural scene. Actually it's a white duck and not a chicken. I'm even not sure if this duck can be eaten. Some of the ducks working as pest hunter in the paddy cannot be eaten and as far as I know it's the white one. Also his beck is a bit different then to the colored duck.

this one really caught my attention!
I can see why this one has gained so much popularity for you.
the depth, the lighting, the geometric design...all are beautiful.
