Photographer’s Note

If anyone was wishing for something besides shots of my summer trip to the Canadian Rockies, sorry to disappoint. I'm just getting going. :)

Balance is something I've thought a lot about recently, specifically the balance between man and nature. In America, we have quite a divide between environmentalists and materialists. I try to avoid either extreme, and think that the true answer lies somewhere in the middle: working to find a balance between the state of nature and the state of comfort, without irreparably harming either. They don't have to be mutually exclusive.

I think of this issue when I look at this photograph, taken barely a mile from the most crowded attraction in Glacier National Park: Logan Pass. Logan Pass is the high point of the Going-to-the-Sun Road through Glacier National Park, and the location of several fantastic hikes. This year, though, there was a lot more late snowfall than usual, so the pass had only opened about a week or two before we went, and the trail to Hidden Lake was completely covered in snow. This beautiful little alpine pond was about the most snow-free sight we saw the entire hike.
