Sky, Surf, Birch, and Rocky Coast
on the North Shore of Lake Superior

HIghway 61 North Shore Scenic Drive
Northeast of Duluth Minnesota

Well another "milestone" in celebration of base 10 math .. but I want to thank all of you for your wisdom and friendship .. I can't begin to quantify the knowledge and I have found here.

Highway 61 is a beautiful scenic route along the North Shore of Lake Superior. Not only is there the scenery of the lake itself but also it is a haven for waterfalls as many rivers and creek cascade down the hills into the lake ..

As one leaves Duluth it is important to watch for the scenic route .. Highway 61 splits into the "expressway" (state highway 61) and the "scenic route" (county road 61) just after Gitchi Gami Park at the edge of Duluth .. the roads join again 20 miles later in the town of Two Harbors .. my first trip up the "north shore" after moving this summer I missed this point .. and was wondering what the big deal about this road ..

Once the road hits the Canadian Border it is still marked as "61" and leaves the shore momentarily to wind up to the city of Thunder Bay, Ontario

In addition to the many small picturesque fishing towns ... and at least one big ugly mining operation .. the main destination points along the North shore are the 8 fantastic state parks that hug the shore protecting the most beautiful sections of coast, waterfalls, and forests .. Here is a wonderful "map portal" to the park system:

In addition to the parks and towns there are countless "pull offs" with lake access .. this image is from one of those

This image is from an August day where Andrew and I drove up the North Shore and sat and relaxed on this stretch of coast for the windy evening. Andrew had a great time trying to refill the lake by tossing the rocks back in ..

from previous post:
Superior is the largest of the great lakes .. the largest lake by surface area in the world ... it is 350 miles across and is 160 miles wide at its widest moment.

again thanks to you all.
