Kestrel Portrait
Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve & Bird Observatory
Duluth, Minnesota.
Every autumn Hawk Ridge becomes a major attraction in Duluth. Tens of thousands of migrating raptors move down the coast of the Great Lake Superior and past the observatory.
I spent a couple of mornings at Hawk Ridge this season. This is the best of my shots .. thanks to the fact that this poor little gal had been captured at the banding station .. after banding the birds are brought out and shown to the crowd before release .. if you wish to donate an "adoption fee" you can have the opportunity to release the bird yourself.
The colorful American Kestrel is the most common falcon in North America. Kestrel's are well known for their "hover hunting" behavior.
The migration past Hawk Ridge runs from mid August through November and is most active during mid September. Raptor watching is best in mid day (unlike most wildlife watching). The ridge is staffed every day during September and October.
During migration, weather and geography cause these birds to concentrate into groups that number in the thousands. These large groups are referred to as “kettles.”
The workshop image is a kettle of Broad Winged Hawks (pretty large birds) riding the thermals over the ridge .. an incredible and common site at Hawk Ridge in the fall.
the total count at the observatory from this fall is stunning:
2 Red Shouldered Hawk
2 Mississippi Kite
3 Short Eared Owl
6 Swainson's Hawk
59 Cooper's Hawk
65 Peregrine Falcon
136 Merlin Falcon
169 Golden Eagle
184 Northern Goshawk
238 Osprey
344 Northern Harrier
534 Rough Legged Hawk
906 Turkey Vultures
1162 American Kestrel Falcon
3238 Bald Eagles
6044 Red Tailed Hawk
12608 Sharp Shinned Hawk
35781 Broad Wing Hawk

Hi John. We have hawks around our area year round but I haven’t been able to get close enough for a deceit shot yet. Excellent portrait. Good detail and smooth bokeh. Your WS looks like something from a Hitchcock film ;-). Thanks for sharing.
Cheers, Paul.

Hi John,
I will be honest..I would prefer the portrait of this magnificent bird made with the bird being free in its natural environment...
However...the quality and fantastic realisation are not in question here. The focus is superb...so is the depth.
The Kestrel looks magnificent althouth I sense the fear in its eyes... A portrait with captured emotion...priceless.
The fact that these birds are released provides me with comfort and gratitude.
My best,
Jeri

Hello John,
This is a fine birdy portrait!
What I like is the silky-crisp feeling of the plumage, very well reproduced...
The composition is fine, the subject well isolated and the bird appears with a fine 3-D feeling!

Bonjour John,
Best from Belgium.

John,
Wow, what a fantastic clarity and sharpness of this kestrel. You can almost see your reflection in its eyes. Beautiful soft but rich color background, really enhanced the sharpness and quality of the bird. Great details on the plumage, every pieces of feather is accounted for. Good composition as well. Congrats for such a fine shot and thanks for sharing.

Most spectacular portrait, John. I remember it well in your site as one of the pictures that most captured my attention. The details are amazing and I also love the pose, the wing like a long shoulder supporting the whole body. Congrats for this gorgeous picture. The WS is a surprise - so many hawks together in the sky!

An excellent wildlife portrait John. The all-important catch-light is in her eye and you have captured fantastic detail in the feathers. Very good choice of DOF so all background distraction is eliminated.

Hello John
Not a usual post from you....but what a fantastic one really! You took this with 400 mm yet the sharpness is amazing. Isolating the majestic bird from the blurred background, the details visible are excellent. Fantastic work!
Hope you had a fine Christmas!

Hi John:
Nice one here, and quite a change from your typical landscape shots. I like the look this kestrel is giving you here--almost as if he wants to be left alone. Probably feels that way after being captured. :) Wonderful depth of field and colors.

Hello John,
I read your conversation about lens and the result is amazing as I saw also in your other posts. The clarity and sharpness is speechless with blurry background. Really a "cute kestrel" as Mr. Mesut Ilgim said. Extraordinary, congratulations. Have a nice weekend.

Hello John -
I don't think there is anything I can add to this image other than, I am envious! Everything, and I mean everything is spot on. You should consider entering this image in a wildlife contest. It is a winner in my book.
Well done! (What an under statement)
Thank you for sharing.
