Winter Survival
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
| I traveled through Yellowstone National Park in mid-winter when temperatures were below minus 20 F. Becuase of the remoteness and deep snows, it's almost impossible to get around unless you use one of the Park's Snowcoaches...like giant snowmobiles with passenger compartments. They're cold, loud and rattle you to death, but they make travel possible. We were looking for wolves when we came across this ram struggling through the deep snow. The animals here are stressed-out by now, just struggling to survive in incredibly hostile conditions. We kept our distance so this ram didn't have to put out more energy to avoid us. Can't imagine how a creature can survive here. It's lonely and cold in the backcountry. |
