Photographer’s Note

We came upon this freshly painted landscape after following an evening storm for several miles across the plains of Wyoming. We had left the Grand Tetons and Jackson Hole as it blew in over the mountains. In front of us, we watched shafts of sunlight cut through the ominous clouds. Eventually we drove into the rain, but then we slowed down enough so that this rainbow stayed just out of reach: at one point it looked like it was in the road just a quarter of a mile ahead of us.

The western plains are a land of wild landscapes, weather, and geothermal features. From Yellowstone, through the Tetons, and south toward Colorado, there is a whole world of rugged terrain and awe-inspiring beauty.
