The Madison River, a photo from Wyoming, West

Photographer's Note

Having had a short break from TE after the Christmas and New Year holidays I thought that another post from Yellowstone in winter taken in January last year would be fitting.

The road from the West Yellowstone entrance follows the Madison River and beautiful winter scenes such as this one can be seen along its length. Access to Yellowstone National Park is restricted in winter and specialist tracked vehicles have to be used. Within the park lies the Yellowstone Caldera which is the largest super volcano on the North American continent. The park is well known for its geothermal features but it is also an ecosystem that contains beautiful sub-alpine forest and meadows, canyons, rivers and lakes. The wildlife is diverse and adapted to the harsh winters. The extreme cold and challenging conditions in winter make this an exceptionally wonderful place to visit.

Hi Ann,
A beautiful view, but it looks quite cold here. What I like here are the two pairs of trees, two larger, a bit away and another pair, much closer and much smaller. Quite a coincidence but very good for the balance. The colours are all very pleasant (but cold).

A splendid winter white scene , simpley , but perfectly composed . I like especially the presence of the little pines trees in the FG , like two children walking not far ftom their parents .

A freezing cold shot, Ann - good for you for braving the harsh open conditions of Yellowstone in winter. Very crisp and clean lines, and a good recording of this peaceful river.

i agree with the others, it is a pleasant composition from this stunning landscape. The trees in the foreground have a perfect placement within the frame and create a good depth for the picture. Wonderful weather this day.(did you ski or did you stay with the car?) Tfs!

Hello Ann,

The season is right, but off by a year... characteristic of my shots. Of all the great National Parks, Yellowstone is one that I haven't had a chance to see. I hadn't thought of harsh winters, but in North Central US, it makes sense that this place would be cold, with the Alberta Winds sweeping the area. Beautiful photo.

A fine well-lit capture of this cold wintry scene. Like Gunnar, I am also taken with the alignment of these trees in the foreground, which are very well included to provide additional interest and give the image depth. I wonder how long the two small ones will take to grow to the size of their neighbours and thos across the river.

Hello Ann,
When winter looks like this, with a blue sky and beautifully clean snow, it seems bearable. This is a nicely composed photo with two well placed trees by the diagonally crossing river. It's perfectly exposed, giving the snow that special light blue shade. I get the impression that the river is not frozen. Is that right, and in that case why?

Nous avons des photos semblables ce matin. Une belle utilisation du blanc de la neige et du bleu du ciel. J'aime la belle diagonale que forme la rivière dans l'image qui apporte de la profondeur à l'ensemble.

this image of Yellowstone in winter is absolutely striking, the landscape and the trees covered with snow has a great beauty and shines under a splendid sunlight.
The contrast between the clean whiteness of the snow and the blue of the sky, as well as the reflections on the water of the river, provide a great aesthetical value to this composition.

A fine photograph from your Yellowstone trip - by Gosh, doesn't time fly? It certainly doesn't seem like a year since you were there.

And a very fitting photograph for this time of year too - not that it's at all cold in Britain just now - perhaps it will get colder in a week or two.

The two pairs of trees - one pair small, the other big - stand out beautifully against a clear azure sky and the shadows on the brightly lit snow are just lovely. Perfect exposure, lovely colours and stunning details and sharpness.

This is a very nice winter landscpe. I like the oblique line of the river with the reflections. The frosted trees are beautiful to see. The shadows on the snow are interesting. The winter lighthas been well managed and the sharpness is very good.

Its only from your pictures that I witnessed the beauty of Yellowstone in winter. Rather a stark image this, with the frosted trees & the icy river. What I like is the long shadows of the trees The blue sky adds to the beauty as well.
