A complete change from my previous post that showed how nature can transform parts of the earth into a complex, primeval landscape. This image is still within the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem but to the Southern area called The Grand Teton National Park. Not far from Jackson Hole this fence stretched across the winter landscape. For those of you who prefer a more traditional landscape I have included a WS to show you the view in the other direction.

This picture proves the rule: the simplier, the better.
carlo62 (12518) 2012-02-20 0:19
che bella composizione, semplice, lineare e perfetta.
L'occhio non riesce a staccarsi dalla linea creata dalla palizzata.
CLODO (24716) 2012-02-20 0:29
This one is far much better than the conventionnal one in the WS! You played well with the lines within the frame, had a good exposition to have some matter in the white. It's minimalistic but so eye catching.
notrap (4680) 2012-02-20 0:37
Ein schönes Beispiel für Minimalismus! Sehr gut, dass auf dem Schnee noch Zeichnung zu erkennen ist und nicht eine rein weiße Fläche entstanden ist.
Have a nice week!
SnapRJW (18690) 2012-02-20 1:06
Great, you posted the fence Ann! A fine minimal composition where each minute detail plays a major role. An inspired composition, I love the blue shadow. Regarding the WS image - beautiful with fine light and detail, you should have posted it as a stand alone. Take care Rosemary
Royaldevon (17787) 2012-02-20 1:10
Good Morning Ann,
I have to say, 'Well seen!'
This is such a minimalistic shot that many would not have noticed the possibilities. It has a pleasing, almost diagonal composition and still uses the rule of thirds. There is just enough tonal change in the b/g to provide a context.
Have a lovely day,
auldal (1348) 2012-02-20 1:36
A super image with great shadows. I have played around with this sort of idea as well here in Scotland, but I like the almost monochrome effect here.
golus (2889) 2012-02-20 2:08
This is a great example of one of my all time favorite areas; "minimalism". A great photographic eye is a must for such a striking shot. For this one I must say beauty of the simplicity. An amazing work, very well done. Thanks for sharing. Best wishes,
Budapestman (82620) 2012-02-20 2:08
a very effective winter atmosphere and I like the composition and the attractive lights, a superb idea with beautiful realization, Tfs! Have a nice week! Kellemes hetet kívánok!
willperrett (2955) 2012-02-20 2:53
Oh yes: this is it! I am always drawn to minimalist shots (though I seldom manage them myself!); I also like B/W incidentally, and though this is colour, it is almost monochromatic. A great graphic: love it!
yquem46 (32229) 2012-02-20 4:44
Real hard o be more minimalist, though quite very graphical and definitely of excellent visual impact
have a nice day
francio64 (38188) 2012-02-20 5:21
bello l'effetto grafico ottenuto da questa staccionata sulla bianca neve.
La sua forma fa pensare ad una: "Y" capovolta.
Well done and TFS!
Ti ho inviato una e-mail.

J'aime beaucoup cette composition. La gestion de la lumière et de la balance des blancs est impeccable. Une très belle idée bien réalisée.
npecanhuk (53881) 2012-02-20 5:29
Beautiful minimalist picture!
Special regards to the chosen pov, composition and management of light!
TFS - congrats,

a brilliant observation and quite stunning minimalist image. So effect and entrancing. Superb!
Have a good week - Brian.
siudzi (23837) 2012-02-20 6:00
What a stunning shot! Absolutely well seen and executed view with perfect exposure, sharpness, color contrast. The graphical effect is outstanding. Bravo!
jjcordier (62280) 2012-02-20 6:03
La photo en WS est de belle qualité et le paysage superbe mais je préfère nettement celle-ci beaucoup plus originale. Une composition dépouillée mais terriblement efficace et un très beau travail sur la lumière.
BennyV (12747) 2012-02-20 6:30
This reminds me of some minimalist etchings I saw in a German expressionist museum. And that's meant as a compliment! Pure form. The blue colour is strange and deserves to be highlighted (as it is here). Complete desaturation would be an alternative, but I like it as it is here.
dkmurphys (36737) 2012-02-20 6:37
Lovely abstract scene from that snowy field. Well observed graphical effects, good shot.
Have a nice afternoon.
rychem (9177) 2012-02-20 7:49
Great graphical effect! I like such minimalistic photos very much, excellent composition
holmertz (26900) 2012-02-20 8:39
I think you have pointed out that you like minimalistic compositions and you certainly show us that very clearly with this photo. This is as simple as it could possibly get, but the three diagonals and the more irregular blue shadow are highly attractive.
worldcitizen (4850) 2012-02-20 11:11
A very nice example of minimalism and graphism in this photo. I like the shadows on the snow and the placement of the fence in the frame. Sometimes less is more. :-)
jimkil (1664) 2012-02-20 11:24
Like a Y in some sense, the shadow is complimenting, nice clean whites in the snow. Great realism in my opinion.
saxo042 (31794) 2012-02-20 11:57
A perfect composition with only a few elements, a very artistic picture and also perfectly cropped.
rbassin (11087) 2012-02-20 12:02
Une superbe photo,le graphisme est excellent.
Un bon coup d'oeil et du bon travail.
tyro (13043) 2012-02-20 15:31
An interesting note and a fine pair of contrasting photographs to accompany it.
Whilst I can fully appreciate the artistic merit in this picture and can see how it might very much appeal to many, I'm afraid it really doesn't "do it" for me. It is very well seen and well taken and technically it's perfect too. But I hope you won't take offence if I sit on the fence about this one.
Your workshop picture, however, is quite a different kettle of fish and that really does "do it" for me! Fabulous composition, gorgeous lighting and colours and impeccable detail and sharpness. I guess I'm just a boring old traditionalist.
So, bottom line: I can admire this one though not love it; your workshop picture I really love and can certainly admire too.
diomed (13926) 2012-02-20 15:58
Very nice winter scenery with a greta graphic impact:just the black shapes with its shadows in the pure white of the snow. A great idea very well realized and composed.
macjake (39207) 2012-02-20 22:39
haha, great shot!
excellent eye and creative mind to be able to forsee the photographic potential!
and you executed it very well.
simple lines and shadow create a beautiful image!
RhodieIke (9207) 2012-02-20 22:58
Wow Ann, Fantastic, you have captured, managed and turned this into a masterpiece, love the fence shadows, Tfs, Cheers Iain.
lakshmip1949 (19110) 2012-02-21 9:14
A very minimal composition. You have managed such a superb composition with only two colors. The white from the snow and brown from the fence. I like the way you have captured the obtuse and acute angles. The shadow is an additional interest.
gildasjan (38184) 2012-02-22 3:29
Une image bien composée avec ce Y allongé dont la barre principale est inscrite dans la diagonale.Un bon contraste noir blanc avec un plus:
cette ombre bleutée.
danos (73946) 2012-02-22 4:39
nice the created texture of the stairs as is spreading on the snowy environment.I like the superb minimalistic scene with the light and the colour management to are superb.
angel66 (1006) 2012-02-22 8:13
I suppose this photo will be add to my favourite shots! :)
So simple so clever! Just perfect in its kind. Brava!
Glint (5569) 2012-02-22 8:22
I really like this. Its simplicity is pleasing.Nicely composed too with the diagonal line leading from the top left corner and then the V or rather two Vs. Its lines remind of one I took at a fruit farm in winter of the bare skeleton of a polytunnel against snow.
Must save to my group theme "graphically pleasing".
Yiannis84 (2824) 2012-02-22 10:23
A very intersting grafical composition..you had a good eye here! a remarkable image extremely well managed..very well done!
MJR (3141) 2012-02-22 13:11
At last - made it back to your gallery... ( Thanks for your 2x attempts to critique one of mine recently. )
This I like, though you could have used your WS to good advantage for a separate post - its that good. That is though a bit like we might expect, all being experts after the BBC expose, but this..
This is AnnJackman all over, seeing something different, seeing the shot, and delivering, impeccably. Just enough contrast to see what there is to see in the snow, and perfect for the fence and its shadow. It might benefit from taking the BR fence to the corner, but knowing you, you probably tried that and thought better of it.
So thanks for an alternate view, keep 'em coming I say..
emka (58078) 2012-02-22 23:59
Wooow, what a picture. Sometimes the snow creates incredible views. Perfect composition. Just the fence and what an effect. Well seen and fantastic presentation.
bergese (6699) 2012-02-23 2:26
Simple,efficace et un travail excellent.
boa (4313) 2012-02-23 11:17
very simple but beautiful and creative composition.(criteria that i really appreciate)I like the contrast of white snow and black fence, shadows creates interest. Nice diagonal fence who split the image, great shot!
Have a nice evening.
Charo (51174) 2012-02-23 11:59
I like the simplicity of this photo that has achieved a minimalist look, very attractive and an excellent frame.
Magnificent light and depth. Bravo!

Hi my dear Ann
Sorry for my late reply, as I get a light pneumonia due to much fatigue, now getting well.
Another great and artstic shot as your own originality! Simple but very impressive image indeed.
Only two color presentation is so attractive too.
Perfect framework and so well considered composition! Thanks for your sharinig with finest work and have a good Saturday!

delpeoples (44904) 2012-02-24 21:23
Hi dear Ann
A very different composition as you say. I like the minimalism and the play of light and shadow. The fence running from the corner of the frame makes a greater visual impact and the sharpness is excellent.
Thanks for sharing, enjoy your weekend
mesutilgim (67914) 2012-02-26 0:14
This capture is quite simple, but the graphical effect is topclass !
İt's in color but has the taste or a monochrome work.
TFS and have a nice Sunday
Best regards from sunny İstanbul !
batalay (32846) 2012-02-26 5:21
A fence and its long shadow on a sea of snow. This is a beautifully composed shot, perfectly exposed. The shadows is just long enough to add drama, and not distract. If they were much longer, the atmosphere created might have been vastly different, becoming the subject of the photo, but perhaps also very beautiful.
I do remember a day in the distant past, while driving across the country to undertake a post-doc at the University of California-Berkeley, when a friend and I arrived in Jackson Hole. The month was June, and it was late at night, and we parked in a National Park. In the morning, we woke up to the majestic Tetons... and their reflections in a glass-like lake.
sevy (13269) 2012-02-27 2:05
I missed some of your shots and I noticed this one in the gallery, really attracted the look with its high readability and an unusual view of the Nature with straigh lines and their moving shadows.
Very good composition with the placement of the fences in the frame.
wolf38 (28146) 2012-02-27 9:10
Hello Ann. A photograph, made for an exhibition. Everything is reduced to the essentials. Very good handling of light. The color looks almost like a black and white image. Well seen and perfect (diagonal) composed. Rgds, Wolfgang.
adores (28182) 2012-02-29 17:36
You got a really good shot with just a simple detail!
The fence and its shadow is great, surrounded by all this whiteness. Very good composition!
Vasa (15970) 2012-02-29 17:36
Your sens for photographic subject is evident. Nice lesson, Ann. Have the best continuation,
vasilpro (40172) 2012-03-01 12:37
Superb minimalistic composition, wonderful lines, excellent details and clarity, lovely light and shadows, beautiful wintry scenery, well done and TfS!
kennyblack (4105) 2012-03-04 2:58
Photos of great visual impact even if the simple realization. Fine lines of the fence with its shadow on the snow where the contrast is very clear and well defined. Congratulations and thanks for the post.
Greetings and best wishes for good Sunday ... Marino
Angshu (51174) 2012-03-04 20:05
This is a wonderful creation, beauty in simplicity & of course well seen & conceived! The starkness in contrast of the fence & the shadow in the white snow creates an eye catching picture.
jaywalker (16061) 2012-03-06 7:35
Hi Ann, What a wonderfully seen picture, this would make for a superb wall print ia a modern home, just brilliant, kind regards Wilson.
Robert1969 (6224) 2012-03-06 23:56
You show that less is more.
I like the open space and composition, because that
makes the picture extra wide (and calmness).
The light management is great: snow = white and
there are no overlighted pieces.
baddori (18988) 2012-03-07 23:14
Attenta osservatrice di geometrie.
Un progetto fotografico molto bene realizzato.
Sintesi ed efficienza strutturale.
Ninello52 (7065) 2012-03-24 16:38
Image very interesting! Excellent graphics essence! Very nice design of the fence and planted his shadow on the white snow! Good at grasping the visual effect and composition! Congratulations!
Best regards, Nino.

Exhibited a good perspective. Beautiful play with light and lines. Well done.
speedymanu (3148) 2012-04-07 12:27
I love the sheer minimalism of the composition. The shadows gracefully interact with the velvety aspect of the snow.
InasiaJones (29316) 2012-06-28 15:27
A minimalist composition, efficiently framed and created.
Less is more.
