The Tulip Festival at Mt. Vernon, Washington, was unusually spectacular this year due to late winter weather keeping the tulips at their peak for a long time. In fact, some fields have not even bloomed yet!
This field is located at Tulip Town. The sky was overcast for most of the day, giving the tulips a rather saturated appearance even to the naked eye. There were a few sun breaks, though. Even so, Mt. Baker did not make an appearance today.
Tulip Town charges $5 for entry into the field, which seems reasonable enough. They allow tripods and whatever else you want to bring, but you cannot take photos in the gift shops. They also do not want people walking down the rows of tulips. You should stay on the perimeter road.
There are many other tulip fields in the area. Some charge for parking and some have admission fees. Others have no parking available and allow no trespassing whatsoever, so you should definitely pick up one of the free tulip maps available throughout the area. The area is also known for its daffodils and irises.
These fields lie dormant in winter, a habitat for snow geese, trumpeter swans, bald eagles, owls, and many other birds. Most of them are from Alaska, spending the winter here. A popular picture is flocks of snow geese flying with Mt. Baker in the background. You would want a 300mm lens for this in order to make Mt. Baker appear large enough in the background. |
