Photographer’s Note

This is a picture of Mt. Saint Helens I took while working as a flight instructor at Tacoma Narrows airport in Gig Harbor, Washington. The photograph was taken from a Cessna Skymaster, a pressurized twin, so I had to shoot through the thick glass instead of the open window that I usually use.

During this time we frequently would get news photographers wanting a picture of the erupting mountain, but by the time we had flown to the area the eruption was over, so they never got anything.

One coincidence: my wife was returning from a trip to Phoenix and was in a plane on the other side of the mountain. Our photographs of the eruption are only a few minutes apart.
