Another picture taken in Palouse country. We came across a very large field of rapeseed (canola) next to the 'Artisans at Dahmen Barn' in Uniontown, WA. This small town is 16 miles north of Lewiston. The long fence is made from 1000 iron wheels and surrounds a large barn which provides space for artisans to work. It is also a venue for the performing arts.

It's no surprise that it wasn't any "ordinary farmer" who erected this fence. It's certainly the most elegant of its kind I have seen, and maybe it even serves its purpose of keeping unwanted visitors out. Regardless if the rapeseed are deliberately part of the "installation", or if the yellow background is just a coincidence, the result is nevertheless stunning.

A good manner to reuse the old rusty wheels in an artistic way, well spotted against the yellow field.

Superb framing and composition that elevates this photograph to the level of a lovely abstract. The yellow background makes the image so lively! Very well observed and interpreted.

Ces roues se détachent superbement de l'arriere plan jaune. Cela est du plus bel effet! Bravo

This reminds me that I haven't had a single picture of a field of rapeseed this year. But this is a delightful photograph in which the bright yellow crop isn't actually the subject itself but a brilliant background for a rather innovative and interesting fence made up of a variety of wheel rims welded together!
Very well seen and very well taken, the red and rusty metal shapes making good contrast with the bright yellow background. A longish lens and a relatively wide aperture has thrown the background nicely out of focus too.
Gorgeous light and colours, perfect exposure and excellent detail and sharpness.

Wonderful one. I always like to watch images of fields glowing in yellow. And on this one you got quite extraordinary foreground with all kinds of rusty wheels making a fence.

The rusty old wheel rims beg to be photographed offering a strong graphical image especially when set against the acid yellow background of the oilseed rape. Excellent control over depth of field. Well observed and very well presented.

love this! Who could resist taking a shot of this. So original and when against a field of yellow rapeseed all the more powerful, arty and wonderful. Superb!

This certainly draws attention to the fact that artisans work on the site! It is eye-catching, it is arty and it serves its initial purpose very effectively. How good that there was a field of rapeseed, beyond! It makes a colourful b/g against which to show off the fence.
Have a great day,

Wonderful detail, a true original way of building a fence. Good catch!

A highly original composition while beauty, those wheels appear to have been put there by creating an original work of art, the bright yellow of the fields, as background, makes your picture, highlight and 3D.
Very good brightness and sharpness, with beautiful colors.
Well seen and done better. I like it
Have a good day.

1000 iron wheels eh? wow, thats alot of iron.
i know other te members have probably already said this, but its pretty hard to pass up a photo opp with all that YELLOW screaming in your face :)
it makes for the perfect backdrop and background.
Infact the bg yellow pretty much takes center stage over the iron wheels.
smart compo all the way, especially with the spokes on the right. creative shot. I'm sure we'd all want to have it in our own galleries :)

Eye-catching image this, even in thumbnail format, thanks to the unusual graphic shapes and the saturated colour of the rapeseed. I like the contrast between the rusty wheels and the flowers in the background. What a fascinating place!
rasterman (311) 2014-07-18 9:51
Fantastic composition with vivid and well saturated color that I like. I love the contrast between the rusty wheels and background. A real pleasure to see your work as always. Thanks for sharing.

un particolare molto originale e ben fotografato, lo sfondo giallo è perfetto per queste vecchie e rugginose ruote.
Gran bel colpo, complimenti.
photoray (10983) 2014-07-19 6:44
Fine artistic Palouse scene with the clever use of discarded metal wheels, wagons, autos, gears, etc., to create a fence, then enhanced by the colorful yellow saturated background.
willperrett (6426) 2014-07-20 1:59
Wacky, wonderful and graphic. Great framing and composition. The colours too of course are a vital part of the effect. Excellent.

Ciao dear Ann
What an amazing fence and what a beautiful way you have photographed it! The vivid yellows of the rapeseed/canola contrast superbly with the rusted beauty of the old metal wheels. A delightful tight crop complements these elements perfectly. An impressive and very eye-catching photo. Well done!
Waylim (25172) 2014-07-23 19:28
Very cool shot with strong graphic with the iron wheels. The background of yellow blossom really give wonderful contrast. I can feel the rough texture of the rusty iron and the way they stacked on tome of one another make it feels like it spinning and moving into the image. Excellent quality.

Hello Ann - I'm a bit slow in commenting on this one (I've been away for a few days) but what a lovely image. This reminds me a little of the sights one sees in the Namibian countryside... farmers seem to find creative uses for all kinds of old machines. This fence is a super US example of "reinventing the wheel" - sorry about the pun. The strongly graphic shapes of the wheels are set off so attractively against the acid yellow field. Good DOF pushes the FG into sharp focus where the signs of age come to the fore. Nicely done. I like this a lot.
Sorry to hear about your ribs but pleased to hear all is coming together for our mini-meet.
Feel better soon.
Graal (96014) 2014-07-27 7:31

Unique view nicely composed with the yellow foreground. Nostalgic a little bit. Museum on the open space. The wheels will keep rolling in the sun and rain for years and dream of the flowery fields. Regards, Petar.

It's not easy to gather so many wheels, I believe! And they seem to be all different! But the effect is wonderful and here I like the composition with the yellow flowers in background. Beautiful shot!
