This is taken near Colfax, Washington in Palouse country. The Palouse is a remarkable area of undulating agricultural farmland extending from Wanatchee in the west of Washington state to the Idaho border, and from Spokane in the north to the Oregon border in the south. It is referred to as the 'Corn Belt' of Northwest America. The towns in this sparsely populated area are generally rather small. Isolated farm buildings, such as the one in the picture, can be seen beside the road. It was raining at the time but I thought was worth getting wet for.

I like the composition and point of view very much with the winding fence leading the viewer toward the subject and focal point of the image. Light and colours are most appealing with their contrasting hues. Excellent rendering of the textural detail in the timbering of the barn.

I do like this! It is a simple mix of elements and yet it is quite irresistible and beautifully balanced. I love the enticing lines the fence on the left make and the rustic textures of the old barn, but it is the leaden sky that gives it atmosphere and a strange beauty. Arty and wonderful!
Have a great weekend - B.

Vraiment mon genre préféré de photo. Le cadrage avec la clôture sur la gauche, la légère contre plongée et le ciel noir spectaculaire en arrière plan.Très belle grange.

very nice composition. The dyke and the fence make great lines. I hope the red paint of this fine building will hold in the upcoming stormy weather.

Simple and very beautiful. I like the colors and the contrast between the sky and the rest of the elements. Well taken.

This was definitely worth getting wet for, great natural catch, my kind of photo.
Thanks for sharing.

Idyllic Washington 'Americana' scene, the traditional wood barn architecture and textures, wood fence curving into the scene, dense green landscape, and contrasted with the dark stormy sky.
Glad you got a little wet to create this fine scene,

Simple shapes, form and blocks of colour. It reminds me of a child's drawing. That's supposed to be a good thing! I like the minimalism, almost naïvete of the composition, as for some reason it reminds me of "American Gothic" by Grant Wood. Excellent work.

Well worth getting wet for, the bet pictures always have a memory with them :) this is beautiful, it's such a simple scene, but you have made it into a dramatic and moody image that looks like something straight from a movie. The undulating land you mention in your note is very obvious here and you composed it so well with the fence leading like this from the bottom left. The sky is really the icing on the cake for me. Really cool image, thanks for sharing.
All the best

Wonderful composition with very appealing colours: the red barn, the yellow fence and the green fields, all against a great background. Well seen and captured!

Hello Ann, it was worth getting wet for!
Excellently composed picture with the fence leading us in from the corner to the lovely red barn.
Your barns in the U.S.A. seem so much more distinctive than ours in the U.K.
The dark sky completes the shot.
Periko (2507) 2014-08-29 15:38
This is a photo of a high technical and aesthetic quality.
I like the composition with these soft colours and the cloudy sky.
pierrefonds (55664) 2014-08-29 18:06
The fence is leading my eye toward the barn which is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing the details and colors of the barn. The cloudy sky is giving a good contrast to the colors. Have a nice day.

A well lit foreground on a background of a dark threatening sky.
The curve of the fence underlines the landscape of undulating hills.
Best regards, Paul

Well done on your perseverance. Many photographers avoid taking photos in the rain - they don't want to get wet but they claim that the light is no good. ;-) You were rewarded with dramatic sky and muted painterly colours.
Great composition with the fence leading the eye through the image.
Have a nice weekend
jemaflor (82098) 2014-08-30 8:59
Well framed with this fence and this impressive grey sky, perfect to gige contrast at your view to present with an original result this red barn.
alvaraalto (6105) 2014-08-30 8:59
Magnificent composition. There are not much different element, but all are essential.
Of course the dark sky above. The blue above the horizon, but also the barn, with its two eyes, the yellow fence like a ponytail with the green grass.
Good inspiration for an impressionist painter.
marabu61 (7789) 2014-08-30 9:52
Gorgeous composition here with the pathway leading the eye beautifully towards the red barn. The colors of the grasses and the barn complete each other wonderfully and the grey sky above is just the cherry on the cake. The whole scene radiates a calm and tranquillity that is very soothing. Truly beautiful.
have a great weekend

A delightful photograph from your trip to the west of the USA and one which again reinforces the observation that the best photographs are often captured when the weather is the least clement - so don't pack away your camera when it rains!
The light here is lovely and I love the way that the foreground light brings out the rich colours of the old red wooden barn, the grass and the fence and makes them stand out so well against that dark and threatening sky.
A fine simple composition with all the elements pleasingly arranged within the frame and with an excellent "lead in" furnished by the fence on the left. Gorgeous colours and exquisite details and sharpness.

Hello Ann ,
A superb cature of this typical barn in stormy conditions . The curve of the wooden fences vey attractive .
worldcitizen (6633) 2014-08-31 13:41
This photo should definitely be made into a poster; it has a classic feeling to it, and a fabulous composition. I like the stormy sky, the winding, wooden fence, and, of course, the red barn. :-) All of the elements come together flawlessly to create something special.

this is an easy WOW

A very curious building.
Good POV and composition.
I like colors and sharpness.
Well done. TFS
CLODO (29706) 2014-09-02 2:16
it seems a common image, but if you detail it, you find the fence leading the eye on the barn located at 1/3, and the soft matching colors in mainly horizontal stripes. The cloudy sky is a bonus.
So, not so common and eye catching.
Nicou (117978) 2014-09-02 8:55
quelle merveille fantastique vue cette ferme de bois toute rouge la courbe de la barrière et ce ciel en fond ces tons c'est fabuleux superbe.
Bravo et amitié

Beautiful rural scene! I used to live in Portland, Oregon, I love the northwest even with all those rain. Great timing and capture of the dark clouds behind the red barn. Love the rolling hills and I can almost smell the freshly cut grass. Good lighting and sharp details. Well done, tfs.
clic (14572) 2014-09-06 7:32
I know why the curse fell upon this forsaken barn: The evil was caching itself in one of the corners. To avoid such vicious behaviors some farmers built round barns in my province of Quebec!
You post a very 'strong picture' enliven of the lovely winding fence.

Wow... The landscape and architecture is kind of minimalist, but there are so many nice details and it is all so nicely "arranged" that it looks almost like unreal (too perfect to be true). Gorgeous compo and image!
TFS, regards, José.
