[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
My husband found this little red spider crawling on him. This little guy was only 5 mm across. I have no idea what kind of spider it is, but it was a struggle for me to get a good shot of him with the macro lens. How do you get all of the subject in focus???

Hi Julie, a nice catch of this tiny critter. There are a couple of ways to get better DOF. Using the same lens you can choose the aperature priority mode and use the smallest (largest number) aperature which will increase the DOF. You might also consider using a longer lens to get the size without having to be so close as the closer the plane of focus, the shallower the DOF proportionaly.

This is a little bit scary ... but I like the fact that only the head and the eyes are well focused !

Julie,

Good work of pouncing (figuratively) on a great subject when you find it, no matter what the complications. Yes, more technical know-how might have helped with the DOF, but you got a great shot anyway. This fellow actually seems to have some personality, which I never associate with spiders, but that's probably an illusion created by the fact tha the has a more human-like face than most arachnids. In any event, quick thinking and a good image.

P.S. What is that fabric we're seeing under your subject. The fibres appear to be synthetic, but it's hard to be sure. Anyway, its presence adds to the otherworldly feeling of the photograph.

My goodness he looks scary! The silvery threads make him look like some kind of space monster. As for the DOF...I have no ideas but will be interested to see what you learn with this new camera.

Great shot Julie!

I recently picked up the same lens, and have been hunting for subjects ever since. I managed some good shots of dragonflys and grasshoppers if you take a look at my portfolio...
One thing about the 100mm lens is the small DOF, I try to increase the f/ stop to get a bit more in focus.

Well done, and keep up the great work Julie!
