Photographer’s Note
after a brief detour into Mexico, back to the American West, Kodachrome Basin to be exact. the small park is full of strange rock formation, and on that evening the intense red light from the setting sun made everything even more bizarre.
this particular rock formation is called "the Sand Pipe", also seen in this photo by Kristaps.
about the name of the place: in 1948 the National Geographic Society explored and photographed the area for a story that appeared in the September 1949 issue of National Geographic. they named the area Kodachrome Flat, after the then relatively new brand of Kodak film they used. in 1962 the area was designated a State Park, and, fearing repercussions from the Kodak film company for using the name Kodachrome, the name was changed to Chimney Rock State Park, but renamed Kodachrome Basin a few years later with Kodak's permission.

Hi Kristine,
The very strong shadows still stress this relief so strange.
The light is beautiful even in the sky. The long exposure and the tripod allowed this very beautiful play of colors at the end of the day.
Great, warms regards

Hello Kristine,
I like the colour palette, as the blue sky enhances the sunlit cliffs so well!
A balanced composition with good details, good choice of time of day as the colour temperature of the light works in your favour here...
Greetings,

Hello Kristine -
Now you know why it is called Kodachrome Basin. This is a perfect example where the right light and timing makes all the difference in the world. A midday this scene would be yuck, but your timing makes the difference. Well done! Henk would be proud.
Thank you for sharing.

Hi Kristine
Actually I do not see a pipe but a patriarch, standing, with a long beard, babylonian style! Yeah, I know! Too much imagination... Anyway, I love the colors. If I could dare, I would say that, under the sunlight, it rocks! well I better shut up and enjoy the landscape, because I begin to fly like a goat! Is it possible to become drunk with colors!? I am probably, after too much time passed in front of the screen!

ciao Kristine!
Raramente si assiste ad uno spettacolo così! Paesaggio fantastico e foto bellissima!! La luce è semplicemente meravigliosa, eccezzionale il rosso ferroso della roccia acceso dalla luce solare che si staglia sul bel cielo blu e nuvoloso. Superbe!!
Saluti, Nino.

Hi Kristine
The landscape is stunning with the tower that looks as though it will wither away at any moment and the rich red earth which contrasts brilliantly with the vegetation and sky. Lovely light.
To be there at sunset did you camp close by ?

Hello Kristine!
A spectacular image of shapes and colors!
Sharpness is excellent, exposure is correct and had a special influence on the final visual results (rocks, vegetation and sky) regarding brightness and shadows, colors were nicely captured! The viewpoint was quite well chosen and the composition was skillfully done!
TFS - congratulations!
Best regards,
Neyvan

Hello Kristine! You really had some wonderful moods, when the blue broke through it really gave you amazing chances ... and you used them, I mean to its best. Very very nice, such strong orange, when I know look at my uploaded stuff from the same area, "my" orange seems pale. Yes light, all about it, hey, and use it and see it and feel it. Fantastic mood, funny shape of the rock indeed. So many surprises out there ... I want to go back right know :))) Have a great day ... Barbara.

Hello Kristine
The light is great here right on the sand pipe & the red rocks, while the valley is in shadows. Good contrast between the red colour & the blue of the sky. Kristaps' note is hilarious especially in context with his WS. America's own Cappadocia, I guess! Fine shot here!
Best Regards
