Nature has created a unique giant rock feature visible from Highway 9, east entrance to Zion National Park. Named Checkerboard Mesa, the rock first started out about 180 million years ago in the Jurassic Age, as lithified sand dunes. The checkerboard pattern was caused by a combination of cross bedding and joints created by frost wedging, water expanding during freezing pushing apart the rock to create vertical joints. The left to right horizontal deep scratches are due to north to south wind direction eroding the sedimentary sandstone.

Thanks Ray, nice note written on mine.
When first looked at this pic. I had in mind an Elephant is taken a rest over there: the rocks texture reminded of an elephant rough skin when looking closely( like I did years ago in a Circus).
Superb nature scenery, made by wind and water for many era's, and intriguing to view.
Fine clear shot, well shown on TE - unique earth formation.

You're capturing well this giant rock by a good angle and excellent tone/clarity, so it's intersting and impressive to the rock with the checkerboard pattern created by frost wedging over long years. It seems to a natural wonderful phenomenon. Natural brawniness is felt for plants growing even if it is under such dry environment.

Every time I visit, I learn something new, and this is a new one to me. Nature created the most amazing effect here, looking like something man would have trouble making on such a surface! Love your presentation against that excellent blue sky.
I wonder has anybody ever considered an alien landing here? Looks the perfect place :)

A few miles east of this mountain is a restaurant that serves the best buffalo burger I ever had.
