Photographer’s Note
The Kennecott Copper Mine in Utah is the world's first and largest open pit copper mine. It is the second largest producer of copper in the United States and produces about 17% of America's copper.
Every year, the mine produces about 300,000 tons of copper cathode, along with "by-products" as 400,000 ounces of gold, 4 million ounces of silver, about 24 million pounds of molybdenum, and about 1 million pounds of sulfuric acid, a by-product of the smelting process, which is used in farming and industry.
The mine is 2 1/2 miles across at the top and 3/4 of a mile deep.
(Information taken from http://www.kennecott.com/about_kennecott.html. More facts about the mine can be found there too.)
