Some of you may remember this picture I had posted a while back, and if not…well, hopefully you just took a quick look to better understand this one for its perspective.
Taken from the interior of this particular entrance to the City Creek Canyon outdoor shopping center in downtown Salt lake City, this is an elevated and opposite view of the fountains along this stretch of the plaza. Obviously the fountains were not running at this time, far too cold. Good thing I had my tripod with me, because there was no way my shivering hands were going to hold the camera still long enough to take this shot.
There’s nothing particularly noteworthy here, I just wanted to share a different point of view during a different point of the year. There is one interesting little nugget of information however. I was told that in order to alleviate the need for snow shoveling, there are heated coils under the pavement which keep things nice and clear at all times for pedestrian traffic…..the multitude of shops have to love that genius idea!
Thanks for stopping by.

Great symettrical view, and the lights in the trees add a touch of magic too. This looks like a nice shopping centre, but it is eerily empty, kind of 28 days later vibe. The light is reflecting very nicely from the surface of the fountains too.
Cool idea on the heated path, but sadly that means snowmen cannot shop here. How are they supposed to buy new carrot noses and scarves if they cannot get in without melting? :)
You go brilliant depth in the scene too, this street seems to reach on forever. Nice one!
All the best

From summer to winter, the place looks entierly different, Jason.
Yet, the colder time taken people to spend more time inside the mall, yield to summer warmer days.
Fine shot that gave extra perspective of the modern surroundings and adorned for the holidays season.
Cheers for a nice contrast in time's and fine clear photo.

Hello Jason - The last line in your note made me sit up and think! I am amazed that a shopping centre would use underfloor heating to keep the snow from interfering with the shoppers shopping experience. On the one hand I am impressed but on the other shocked. I do hope that the management are using recycled, self-made, ecologically produced energy as not to do so seems to be consumerism gone mad. They could also give work to the unemployed which seems to be a better option when there are so many who struggle day-to-day. I hope that I am being unnecessarily critical here as I shudder to think of resources being used in such a way but living in Africa where many people have barely enough to eat and no place to lay their heads this seems to indicate the very worst of western life.
Now having removed myself from my soapbox I will say that you have presented a finely managed shot which focuses on the lines of perspective emphasised by the rows of delicate Christmas lights. I like the contrast between the cold looking greys in the distance and the warmer toned colours of the FG.
Have a great weekend.

une belle composition avec beaucoup de profondeur et une belle luminosité. J'aime beaucoup les illuminations des arbres et des réverbères. Tous ces petits points lumineux animent joliment la photo.
Un bon week-end.

Yes, I remember that post and I like this view of the interior. I think, if you take the photos of this place from the same point of view during a different day time, you also will get amazing difference ;)
Attractive garden. fine details!
Have agreat weekend!

What's occurring Dude?
no shot to curl my cheekbones today. See you are getting a reputation now.
The thing that strikes me about this wonderfully enticing and attractive image is how you US folks are so geared up for snow and cold. Here we haven't got a clue and the only heated coils are the ones used on Football pitches. The cold obviously kept the crowds away too, but being deserted seems to make this Christmassy image all the more compelling. I assume this cold shock to your system after Phoenix was a contributory factor to the old Scooby-doo?
I hope you're back up to speed now, have a "clear" chest ;-)! and can enjoy the weekend. B.

J'aime beaucoup l'effet entonnoir de cette composition. On a vraiment l'impression que tous les éléments veulent se rejoindre au centre au loin.Les décorations de Noel sont bien jolies et le point de vue parfait.Une très belle symétrie.

Interesting shopping spot, for the centered pools from front to back, parallel old style lamp posts, then the tree branches highlighted with lights.
A nice blend of nature with modern commercialism.

you have exalted your symmetrical composition by a wise tight framing that focuses on the elegant architecture and decorations and relies on them to create a lovely, artistic presentation. Depth and sharpness are excellent all the way to the background and there's also pleasing sense of space. I like very much how shapes, rigid lines and subtle patterns mingle. Every feature is distinct and nothing looks out of place. I also like how the cold grey tones are surrounded and mildly contrasted by a limited but delightful palette of warm colours. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely weekend,

you are right - the perspective in this photo is extraordinary and I like the symmetry of the composition. The POV seems to be quite high and it suits the photo well. The trees with plenty of little lights add some delicate touch. Great sharpness and depth.
Have a nice weekend

Good pov with an interesting depth for the photo, nice symmetry and good result with all these lights in these trees.

a very pretty plaza. I like the many pools and the light poles and trees. Funny this pretty place be empaty, if I undersant people are under the paviment a more warm place. But it is still empaty, like a desert. Very curious.
Thanks for share.

the only real sense of cold winter temps I see are way off into the bg, the trees certainly have snow and ice.
but if you ever want to experience some REAL cold temps, you should travel to Iceland in March! Yikes that was cold!
good use of the F22, lots of depth and definition in this one my friend.
take it easy!

it´s a good example, how different perspective can influence our perception of the same place.
Really love this POV!It creates so nice depth and symmetry. Also the Christmas lights on the trees help you to create festive mood of the scene(love them also because of their contrast to the snowy BG).
Magnificent shot my friend!
Looks like Somebody's been busy in SLC:)great to see you were more diligent during Christmas than me:)
Have a nice sunday

The christmas lights on the trees and the complete stillness of the water in the fountain renders this otherwise unremarkable city scene quite pleasing indeed.
Looking to the distant snow covered trees and street it is almost like looking trough a window in to an other world.
have a great time
Royaldevon (39802) 2014-01-12 14:26
Now, that sounds like a great idea, under-pavement heating! A great way to negate the problems of snow in city centres. I wonder if the pigeons would recognise the benefits! They surely do congregate in the most sociable places!!
This is a really good, symmetrical composition. There is no ambiguity about your lead lines. The converging lines create a great sense of perspective.
I do love all the lights on the trees. It will make a very welcoming ambience as twilight approaches.
My warm regards,
mcmtanyel (24079) 2014-01-12 16:32
It might be convenient not to have to remove the snow, but they are paying for it with the lack of white blanket that seems to spruce up winter scenery. This is a photo with great symmetry and perspective. The lights and the snow that is apparent in the not-so-fortunate distance are pretty.

Hi Jason, very good picture of this excellent overview of this exciting public space with fountains and glowing trees, beautifully composed and captured this beautiful image with good sharpness, depth, light and color. Very nice and interesting job perfectly done, congratulations my friend. Thanks for sharing this beautiful work.
Good morning and happy start to the week.
Warm greetings from southern Spain.

Excellente perspective, la décoration sur les arbres, les lanternes, un endroit très joli a regarder, bien cadrer et présenter
mirosu (16273) 2014-01-17 3:22
First what caught my attention was nice symmetrical arrangement. You must know that I am an engineer and I like symmetry very much. It is not always preferred by photographers but symmetrical layout works very well for photos of this type. I also like the high angle viewpoint allowing nice view of the water fountain and the nice decoration, and also building facades on both sides. Very well composed photo. Well done my friend.
emka (100071) 2014-01-18 21:50
very nice place in SLC, your hometown. Excellent symmetry, it is for me strange that you have winter there, I can see some traces of snow on the trees. it looks very attractive with the christmas decorations and the lamps already lit. And where are people gone? And heated coils under the pavement is a nice idea. My neighbours have them and no need to shovel. But I am lazy and do not do it anyway :).
Warm regrads Malgo

Nice view from a dominant position
Interesting mixing between natural and artificial lights

The decorations look simple but elegant! I like this pov and the symmetry. You got a very good dof here. I see you preferred taking pictures instead of shopping:)!
Gigidusud (21151) 2014-02-07 13:19
Bravo!
Bon Week-end mon ami.
