This picture was taken shortly after a rainstorm, when the clouds broke and the sun shined through with some of the most vivid light I’ve ever seen. The sky became incredibly colorful and was highlighted with a purple tint.
I was driving at the time it happened, and I tell ya’.…I couldn’t find a parking spot fast enough! Once I parked the car and scrambled to grab the camera and tripod, I went sprinting down the street with trepidation that my pants were not going to stay up…..glad I found this vantage point before that actually happened!? :) The window of opportunity for this light was closing fast and I didn’t want to miss the moment…which would have still been worth it though, despite the embarrassment.
Featured here is the L.D.S. (a.k.a. Mormon) Temple, which sits right in the heart of downtown. Salt Lake City is the headquarters of the LDS Church , and this is almost assuredly its most well known and recognizable temple among the 141 that are located worldwide.
Dedicated in 1893, this was the first temple topped with an angel. The original 40-inch (1m) plaster model was completed October 4th 1891 and exhibited at the Salt Lake Fair. A full-size model was sent to Salem, Ohio, where the statue was hammered out of copper and covered with 22-karat gold leaf. The 12-foot-5-inch (3.81m) statue stands on a stone ball on the 210-foot (64m) central spire on the East side of the building.
Thanks for taking a look!

can understand why you wanted to capture this. It is such a beautiful and expressive light. The sun caressing the angel is just amazing and your capture just perfect. It is an impressive church and one that is famous the world over and when presented like this inspiring too! Glorious imagery and well worth losing your pants for! ;-).
Have a great weekend - Brian.

C'est ma lumière préférée que tu nous montre sur cette superbe cathédrale de l'Utah.Le soleil qui frappe en diagonale avec un ciel sombre en arrière plan. Les trois clochers sont splendides et d'une grande netteté.

Hi Jason. You were surely blessed by this magical light and golden effects. The temple appears like a dream floating in the sky thanks to the harmony of colour. Excellent details. Regards. Klaudio.

Fantastic red sky above the magnificent mormon church.
The golden light enhanced the many turrets, and you managed to catch a wonderful minute, also great contrast.
Well done my friend.

it is really high-time to capture this shot. Lovely golden hues of the light which made your composition special. Sometimes waiting an hour can give such special light. Your composition is good (probably side view of the temple). Nice depth and good sharpness. An eye catching presentation indeed. Tfs.

Wooooooooo...... Now that is some building, and I am so happy to see you post this, its just as beautiful as its sihouette hinted in the previous post. The building has all the feel of a fairytale castle with the many turrets and spires, the golden light across the building is striking and the purple hint to the sky sublime.
Wow, I've swallowed a dictionary for this, but gladly so, its a stunning shot of a stunning building! Thanks for posting this.
Sucks to be that angel though, hope shes not afraid of heights!
All the best

No photographer could turn his back on an opportunity to capture this building! Your notes tell us that this shot followed a storm and I have often witnessed that light can be quite amazing following such weather. It sometimes seems almost iridescent.
The LDS building looks like the palace of King Midas, with its gilded façade, and this set against the pink sky! Beautiful!
My warm regards,

Funny note, I know that feeling worst is when you are in a train or touristic bus and you watch how great images pass and you can t do nothing
Here you arrived at the at the right moment with the fading sun on the side of the church and on top the golden angel
Beautiful capture of contrast

Une lumière incroyable qui donne de superbes couleurs à ce temple.

You are very lucky photographer to get such a fantastic light for tis photo. I have photo of this unique temple which I captured many, many years back with my, still, analogue camera. But can't compare the quality with your brilliant photo. The view from lover angle makes the temple towers majestic and dominant. The soft warm light is perfect, the contrast against blue-purple sky excellent. Really well composed and captured photo. Wish you a nice weekend. Greetings, Miro.

Spectacular light indeed, I can really understand your rush for this.
Amazing cathedral for a free church, they must be quite rich to be able to build a thing like that. As an atheist I am not really up to date with this church. The whole composition has an outworldly mood to it with the golden light falling on the church against the purple sky and the angel stands out beautifully.
have a great weekend

probably one of the best moments for photography.Great, you were able to find parking spot fast enough:)and of course capture this scene!
Haha, who cares about the pants:)when the end result is so captivating,am I right:)?
I like the close-up view, which together with this exceptional light create so unique, lovely mood and let the building appears to us even more monumental and beauitful.
I´m glad to see your trip was so successful.
Superb composition my friend!
Wish You a nice weekend

Attractive detail of that upper part of the impressive building. A charming warm moment, well taken.
Have a nice day.

Indeed, that sky has incredible colours and the light that shines sideways also creates stunning colours on the towers of this Mormon temple.
I understand you had to park your car as quickly as possible for a picture of this exceptional view.
The statue on top of the middle tower shines like gold.
This temple (or at least its towers) has a high Disney-level.
Best regards, Paul

Wooooow!!!! Yes, I know that Solt Lake City is capital of Mormons, but I have never see their church. I remember the Mormons have got a few wifes. I am not sure that is very good idea... I'd like to change them sometime like the cars of new models ;)
Excellent colors, as a result of the right PoV and the sunset illumination.

Hey Jason - back from a little TE breather... And I find this absolutely stunning shot from a city that keeps getting higher on my must-see list. Of course the Capitol is a big reason, but massive Mormon architecture is really a sight to behold, and this is the motherlode right here. Your light is just awesome here, going from gold to purple with those amazing clouds behind. The statue atop the building is practically glowing in the sun - really beautiful work. Thanks!
macjake (45588) 2013-08-27 7:39
well, if that tiny angel is 12 feet tall, it gives a good sense of how large the building really is.
and i know what you mean by wanting to capture this light as soon as possible, it may not last long, and often right before or right after a rainstorm is the best opportunity for mother nature to show off her stuff!
I also know Lisa will love this as she's a huge fan of Pink and Purple hour shots - but she's in Ireland as we speak so I'm not sure if she will get around to it or not.
great looking post from Salt Lake City, we don't get to see many shots from there!
And lets thank the Lord your pants stayed up!!
The 64 million dollar question is....if you pants DID fall down, would you have kept going? lol

Hi Jason, I read your story with great interest trying to imagine the whole situation. And we all here u nderstand you very well, when you see such fabulous light there is no second to loose. I would also run like mad with camera. How fortunate you were that you managed to find such POV. The view is gorgeous. Stunning colours. Funny this huge golden angel, unusual as the top of the church.
Gigidusud (10236) 2013-08-31 8:00

Bon week-end mon ami.

struck by the romantic colors, i then realized your 8 sec.s exposure. was it dark or why long exposure in daylight, a bit curious i am. interesting architecture. i tried a googleimages search and found out that your photo creates wonders in favour of this building. you may sell it.
KristinsCamera (1895) 2013-09-09 20:05
jason, i don't know if you could have captured a more perfect moment ~ this is just gorgeous. the colors are a feast (of mostly desserts) ~ warm and rich. and the lonely little angel at the top, addressing the heavens in his golden hour ~ just beautiful.
so happy you captured this.
(and that you managed to keep your trousers on.)
all best ~
