Photographer’s Note

Every year, Temple Square, home to the Salt Lake City LDS Temple, is filled with thousands of visitors every night. They are there to see the millions of Christmas lights, hear the famous Mormon Tabernacle Chior, and consider the nativity.

The night we were there, it was almost standing room only, an incredible number of people, and this is a big area.

I thought the lighting on the Temple was quite beautiful, with the contrast of the trees in the foreground. I am very used to using a view camera with the ability to control perspective. Something not afforded well with an SLR. So to make what I thought was an honest rendition, was to pull the lines vertical using transformation in Photoshop.

I averaged an exposure that would keep most of the image within range. The bright floods at the base of the building were just beyond what I could keep within the dynamic range of the camera. I could have brought those values down with less exposure, but would have lost any detail of the people in foreground of the picture, also loosing front to back depth in the image.
