Photographer’s Note
Just what the world needs, another sunset photo. Cliche, overdone, $$$ for Eastman Kodak and Fuji Film. But, just like most people, I have a weakness for sunsets. The way the light paints the landscape, adding color and dimension, a most beautiful time of the day. A great time to reflect.
I was trying to photograph the Timpanogos range, and the light just wasn't helping me there, but like an insect to light, I was drawn to this sunset wiht the clouds, the colors and shapes.
I used my lens at 10mm to increase the amount of sky that I could capture. The grass in front of me is less than 1 ft. from the lens.
If I could have had more dynamic range I would have been happy, I really didn't want to blow out the sky where the sun was still intense, but the CCD has its limits.

Very nice work, Dana! It looks like the new beggining after the end of something... The mood is of renewal, the image is pure faith!
The lights are very nice. I love the mood.

cliche or not. Its a marvellous scene and you convey it very well. Moreover, I like your use of the foreground here to make it more than just a 'postcardy' sunset. I wonder whether you used a fill flash to illumate the straws. My only complaint is that the straws appear to be a little oversharpened, but that is a detail. OVerall the pic really works.

Might sounds weird but it reminds me a little of "lord of the rings". The light is some dynamic and the backlit grass up front is so colorful and sharp. Very well done photograph.

Hi Dana:
There's a reason there are too many sunrise/sunset shots. You just can't get that lighting and those colors almost any other time. I really like this one, because you have not only fantastic lighting in the background but a well-lit subject in the foreground. I wouldn't worry too much about the dynamic range of your camera--your SLR certainly has a higher dynamic range than my little G2! I'd have had a hard time pulling off this shot even with a grad. Great job.

Hi Dana. A brilliant image but, in my opinion, an ND filter to take some of the sting out of the sun would make a heck of a difference. The light on the foreground is inspired and the tones in the sky and middle distance are superb. A beauty. Regards, Paul.
