Photographer’s Note
Location: The Gunther Trades Building at Utah Valley State College (soon to be University) in Orem, UT.
About the Photo: I shot this photo of a fellow student while I was in between classes several months ago. Never thought I'd upload it. Maybe I've been possessed. Somebody call an exorcist. I’m serious!

Surely about time to upload this one. Beautifully balanced composition. You caught the guy at just the right spot on his way up the stair and I contrast between light and dark makes for a nice graphic image. At the expense of detail, albeit, some areas are blown out etc. But it does not bother me very much. What does bother me a bit is the large patch of black in the top of the image, I'd play around with formats cropping some of it. Just an idea!
Cheers,
Miks

Hi,
Deep blacks and great tonal range here, with a great compo, the melted black stair is brilliant.
Great shot

Hello, Ryan--
Nice work here, i like how you used heavy dark upper sections and lower sections to compress the detail, giving the picture a very heavy mood. The extreme tones work well for me, emphasizing the contrast and contributing to a feeling of simplicity.
Thanks!

Well, whoever managed to possess you has done a fine job bringing out your eye for B&W composition. Great contrasts...the solid black space makes the small lighted area glow...Also, the slight blur in the stairclimber is very welcome.

Chris.

It's difficult not to be enthusiastic about such a strong graphic image but something is really holding me back here ......I appreciate the fact that there are heavy shadows and strong contrasting light, I appreciate the fact that there is a figure within the image but...........then what is happening for my eye....the geometry isn't quite working for me - the guy is released by the darkness not so much oppressed by it......I play with the idea of him coming down the stairs instead...what a different feel this gives and now he is walking into the space not so much competing to take our eye away from it and beyond the frame.....perhaps that's it?......maybe the figure is a little wooden - a split second more and he would be in a more dynamic posture.......a strong picture which I feel should like more but which critically is not working as well as I think it could....
best wishes Kev

Top work Ryan, love the amount of negative space youve left here, and leaves us with a sorry, lonely feeling on behalf of the man making the upward trek.

Hello Ryan,
Tua as posté une assez belle bichromie ! J'ai l'mipression que cet étudiant va subir un examen et qu'il est perdu dans ces pensées ! Le cadrage accentue effectivement cette impression de pression !
Bien vu !

I think that, though not one of your best, this is a very effective shot. There is the emergence from darkness to light, the strong geometry, and the subtle shadows on the stairs. Perhaps there's a bit too much black space at the top--you could remove up to a third of it. The bright areas are rather blown out, which takes away subtlety; in fact the exposure would ideally be darker overall for more mystery. But the mystery is there nonetheless, and maybe the fellow's unconcerned posture only adds to it. Regards, Ken.

Hi Ryan:
Interesting shot. I like the low light in it. I would have cropped it a bit (top, bottom, and left side), but not a ton. I think the title fits the shot. Good job.

Hi Ryan,
Interesing BW shot. I like how you played with the dark and light areas to create this urban atmosphere. Well seen and executed.

Can't really figure it out why you would be possessed but I am calling that exorcist... :) It will be ready when you come to Lisboa. It's always nice to see you away from the landscape :) although I do love your landscape work. I do agree with both of you and Kev regarding the more dynamic take on the main subject. A millisecond later... But I do like that he is going up. He is running away from the darkness into the light. It's a different mood, but you know I am more a guy of light than of shadow. Love the overall dark framing. It really makes that escape feeling more intense. Great shot!

Nice exposure, Ryan! The title fits very well, specially due to the heavy black portions. Good work!

great black and graphism between it... Maybe a little crop on the upper part but not sure at all... Anyway, I really like the result, the mood, the light.

Hi.
ANother excellent shot in a different style.
I really like the big contrast of your b/w. The place is very interesting and you have catched a good moment with this man in a good position, the choice of the vertical and the nice light.
Excellent.

Adoro este tipo de imagens, Ryan. Faz-me lembrar os ambientes do Jinju no metro, que tanto me atraiem. Composição minimalista, contrastes fortes é isolamento de uma alma humana, é uma combinação poderosa em fotografia. E como já tenho verificado, as que não são perfeitas, são melhores que as perfeitas, pelos debates e críticas que provocam. É o caso desta. Excelente crítica do Kev. Eu não me lembraria de muito do que foi mencionado e concordo com vocês os dois, mas ainda assim adoro esta foto - se calhar também fui possuído :)
