Photographer’s Note
Location: This slot canyon is located about 3 miles from the Hole-in-the-Rock road in
Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument.
About the Photo: There are many slot canyons in Southern Utah and Northern Arizona. The most famous is Antelope Canyon (Upper and Lower) near Page, Arizona, but there are many others that offer spectacular hiking and photographing opportunities. Unlike Antelope Canyon however, most of these canyons are free and usually not as crowded. I shot this photo this morning. We were all alone during the entire hike and I spent over an hour photographing this canyon without any other photographers around. Some parts of this canyon are very tricky to navigate, especially with camera equipment. The rewards are great though, and I will probably upload more photos of this canyon in the future.
P.S. Can anyone name this slot canyon?

Ryan,
absolutely fantastic and I can just imagine what an experience that must have been to be there alone without anyone else to share POV, view, angles, compositions, etc. Excelent that you got a partner not only to share this moment but also to have her to give the scale and human reference.
I'm still very undecided were to go in July. It will be either Montana, Wyoming or the Colorado Plateu with Grand Staircase Escalante NM as well as Coyotte Buttes. Have you been to later?

A fabulous photograph, Ryan - not only is it a great travel and 'geographic' image, the lines and colours make it very artistic too. Without your partner in the shot, this would have been one of those abstract 'guess what this is photograph', but I like her inclusion as it gives the photograph scale, perspective and depth. The long exposure to give this the deep DOF works very well - your partner was very obliging to 'freeze'for 3 seconds! No, can't name this canyon as I haven't been there, but your photograph makes me want to go. I shall add this to my favourites to remind me to add this to a future itinerary. Cheers . . . David

Nice that she wore blue and green to contrast with the red of the canyon! Having her down there does a lot for the shot--it looks like such a confined space, almost closing in on her. Was it a tricky climb to get to your high POV? Whatever, it was worth it. Usually people shoot slot canyons as beautiful abstracts, but that's been done so many times...nice to see a different take. Regards, Ken.

Yes, I read that novel many years ago in my former life as a teacher; great title! And very good photo, beautifully composed to place figure in the bottom left quarter. The clothes contrast nicely with the amazing colours of the rock. Superb exposure with polariser bringing out the richness of colour.

Hi Ryan,
Magnificent shot of this fascinating place. How on earth did she get to stand there? Looks like the only way is to be lowered by rope! I suspect the camera angle has something to do with that though, right?
Setting up a tripod must have been tricky too, but the light is perfectly managed and the colours are wonderful. Human inclusion shows the scale and the patterns on the rocks keep the eyes moving.
Well done and thanks for sharing your experience.

Hi Ryan,
I am staring to it, have no words for this, what a shot. Your pov, where were you, did you climbed upwards? And with 3 seconds, you really leave us with a bunch of questions how you made this. What a place, i drove by there, never knew it was there, man i must return. See how narrow it is, you must feel to a kind of Indiana Jones when hiking through this canyon.
You know..........i keep on staring to it, it's your pov what it does, that's for sure. You know what you need. A 1Ds mkIII and i keep stop posting here. If you create this with a 30D than i hold my breath when you have the big one. You really make amazing material, deep and deep respect..!!!
Take care, Henk

Hi Ryan, this really is a fantastic image. The canyon is amazing! The horizonal lines just take my breath away. I feel like I'm moving hyperspeed through this canyon straight at that very still person. Great great pov!
A wrinkle in time is an excellent title for this shot...and the book was even better many years ago when i first read it.

Hi Ryan,
I'm pretty sure this is the Zebra Canyon. You must have shot this from up a dryfall at the end of the slot. I haven't been there myself but I read about it. I guess I'm getting more apprehensive about entering the slots alone as I grow older. My latest trip was short, extremely windy and the light was not really good. We should plan a joint excursion next time. I'm particularly keen on backpacking the Coyote Gulch. Fantastic image by the way! Best,

I would name it intestine canyon, it looks like the bowels of a beast, but sunlit (albeit indirectly) the presence of the figure is essential in giving scale here.

Hello Ryan, your POV is amazing and it makes your shot very special. As others have stated, very often, these canyons are shown more as abstract pictures,[there's nothing wrong in that,]but the inclusion of the figure was an excellent idea.
We get a real appreciation of the scale.
Colours, sharpness and light management are all excellent.

Hi Ryan:
Zebra Canyon--a place I've always wanted to visit. This is the kind of crazy stunt that my wife hates when I try to pull (though I've never pulled anything like this). How you balanced that tripod I'll never know. I love this shot--it provides both a great view of the canyon and the perspective of a rock-climber. With the person down there it feels even more like a rock-climber shot. I guess non-photographers would never understand why you would ask her to wear blue or why you would climb that high just for a "picture," but it makes sense to me. :) Great job.

Hi Ryan,
This is a refreshing take on the slot canyon motif. So often images from these locations celebrate the forms themselves in mostly abstract terms or using rays of light. This portrayal is elevated for me by including a person. I bet travel mags would scramble to publish this one. I am so looking forward to getting to some of these places in the US.
By the way your partner gets an honorary 2 points for standing still for 3 seconds :)
Cheers!

Hi Ryan,
I've seen pictures here on TE of the Antelope Canyon.
Also in this canyon the colours and the horizontal lines are very beautiful ... but the extra element here is that a person on the picture gives us a good idea of the sizes.
On your picture we can see how narrow the canyon is.
Well done.

Hi Ryan.
This is an incredible picture. I really like the walls of the canyon. I think you have a great composition with the person in the picture here. Also your higher point of view gives a better effect as well. Did you climb up to that view point? Good for you with setting up your tripod in there!
Well done and thanks very much for sharing.

Hello Ryan,
This is possibly one of the most overphotographed of all the Southwestern landscapes and it is a challenge to do a unique image of the Slot Canyon area. You created an outstanding photograph and a very fresh and creative one at that! The composition and the swirlling patterns of the rocks are fabulous and you posed the model perfectly! Finally, a Slot Canyon photo that fascinates me rather than make me yawn from "seeing this all before". I love it!

Ryan,
A very nice shot indeed, not least because it is such a departure from the cliched slot canyon (usually Antelope) shots that you mention. Whilst these are often individually very beautiful, they are mostly just a straight copy of shots seen elsewhere.
I was lucky enough to have a little time around Escalante last year, and certainly found it to be a wonderfully underdeveloped area with an infinite number of avenues ready for exploration. I'd certainy love to return.

Not only the place itself is incredible but the point of view and the angle you've found here is outstanding.
And when I read how you managed to achieve this... I just have to present you all my congratulations.

All my congratulations again for this extraordinary shot.

The Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument is probably the last great "untouched" photo opportunity left in the lower 48 states for the serious landscape photographer. Your pictures are testament to that.
What a GORGEOUS image. The lighting, at least at this location and time of day and year, is a lot different from Antelope Canyon. I'm not even sure if it is Navajo limestone or not. The marble ice cream look is quite striking and sinuous. Including your model for scale gives a sense of just how big this structure is.
Fabulous Picture! I envy you.
