Sunset Over the Painted Hills, a photo from Oregon, West

Photographer's Note

I captured this sunset over the Painted Hills Unit from the beginning of the Overlook Trail Road. Peter B. had decided to climb to the top of the Carroll Rim Trail as I was capturing an image of a single hill within the valley beneath the Overlook Trail. Upon exiting the valley and seeing that the sun was going to emerge from beneath a tiny sliver of clouds that spanned the horizon, this was the scene that spread gold light across the Painted Hills and as far as one could see into the distance. The Carroll Rim Trail would offer one the entire region under sunrise or sunset with a wide perspective lens, no more than a 15mm to capture the entire range from near to far.

simplistic but great image! compsition with one third horizon is also very good. I like the colours of these hills aat sunset, really beautiful!

The palette of colours is rich and very attractive.
The warm ochred tones are enhanced by the marvelous light.
There's an empty feeling but it strengthens the immensity of this wonderful place.

The arid land in the depth is look like the feature on Mars, very nice color while shining in soft sunlight at evening, good frame to the wide landscape, distinct photo, thanks for sharing.

Hi Steve,
I didn't know you are still active here. Ahhh, such a wonderful shot, though the sky is cloud on the eastern side but the western is clear to allow such beautiful light illuminating the whole landscape in golden warm tone setting the already rich with colors hills on fire, I wish I could have stay there for sunset, but I was trying to look for a place to stay the night. Not much out there. I dream of visiting again one day.
