This was taken from a crumbling cliff top looking down on a beach near the coastal resort of Seaside. Seaside is the oldest and largest coastal resort in Oregon with its first guesthouse opening in 1870. In 1888 it became connected by railroad allowing commercial and recreational activities to develop. With a population of 1600 by 1910 it expanded to over 10,000 in the summer months.
There are some very busy beaches in the area that contrasted with the quieter ones that we visited in other places along the wonderful Oregon coastline. However, there are still some quieter spots to be found such as this one.

This is a very attractive composition with fine tones of silver and a touch of gold. The waves come rolling very nicely towards the beach and the three persons who look very small - from this distance and in comparion with the sea.. You captured a pleasant atmosphere and cropped this to a suitable shape.

This is another lovely shot from the Oregon coast, taken, I presume, in late afternoon when the sun was getting a little lower in the sky.
The light is simply stunning as it catches the surface of the water, the waves and the ripples of water on the sand, giving an appearance like liquid silver. And that same light illuminates the bathers superbly well too - almost silhouetted but not quite as we can still see detail in them.
Glorious light, fine colours, perfect exposure and a lovely composition. Excellent details and sharpness too.

A delightful composition, beautifully illuminated and with a superb atmosphere. The composition is excellent with the three figures placed bottom right and the incoming breakers drawing the viewer up the frame.

I like the effect of the high POV, that compresses everything to a single plane and which you used very cleverly to make a compo with great visual impact, with the persons, rock and waves rendering a nice visual arrangement. The light and its reflections on the textured water surface also helps making a very attractive image.
Regards, TFS, José.

Pleasing composition with the pov and the framing in the vertical format combining to produce a flattened out two dimensional effect, and that makes the picture really special. Excellent creative work!
Congratulations and thanks for sharing this beautiful picture.

I like the high POV of this picture. Combined with the beautiful late light of the sun gives it the photo a special effect that makes it more interesting,

I like very much the sense of height, space and motion conveyed by your composition, which is minimal but feels so rewarding. The three people make attractive focal points and add scale and interest. The soft light and the harmonious colour palette make the scenery and its atmosphere very tranquil and appealing. Motion and textures are wonderfully brought out by the light. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely evening,

You found a really good viewpoint to take this beach shot. I like the composition which shows people as tiny creatures surrounded by elements. I really like the soft light and the patterns created by waves. The reflection in wet sand is the cherry on the cake.
Have a nice evening

Gorgeous! I'm glad you excluded the sky: it's given the shot a more graphic, less landscapey feel. Indeed there's an interesting abstract pattern here if I half-close my eyes! The presence of the figures is of course also important, and they're placed in the frame with taste and precision. Nice one.

Firstly, I love the name 'Seaside'.
Can you imagine, I'm just going to the seaside at Seaside!
The photograph is excellent.
I love the way that you have captured the waves coming in to the shore, each like a giant pleat. And, we still have the sense of the water returning from the large stone. It is masterful.
The composition is equally good with the three figures (always a good number for composition) strongly placed.
I just have to mention the reflection in the wet sand. It seems to give a whole new dimension.
My warm regards,

Can't take my eyes off! A wonderful show of incredible foam from the pounding waves and lovely low warm light. Enjoy the great detail here that you have timely captured the power of nature really well - Nature at its best! Thanks for sharing this wonderful shot. Congrats.

Excellente composition verticale avec ces vagues successives et ces trois baigneurs bien placés dans l'image. Jolis tons d'image et belle utilisation de la lumière.

Your high POV and achieved dark tonality are the keys of this fantastic work! Very well seen and vertically composed one with superb light management. Well done!

a delightfully original beach shot this. I really like the way you have used the waves as layers that divide the image so appealingly. The light and human interest all adding perfectly to the effect. Like it a lot!
Have a great weekend - B.

Hello Ann - Fancy a seaside town named Seaside... I like that, it immediately gives me the impression of a place for sea, surf, fresh air and recreation.
I like this very much, the light reflecting off the sea is silver and gold and shimmers and blinks beautifully. The few figures and the rocks add a touch of context to this study in tone and texture. A minimal but very lovely seascape.

Very good dominant point of view with interesting baxklights effect
Good frame quality of the scene

I like this kind of vertical beach composition. I have a photo similar to this one in my favorites. The chosen crop and POV create a kind of optical illusion, as if the ocean were rising straight up. The layers of waves are really nice, and the lone rock and small number of people complete this excellent scene.
batalay (39277) 2014-08-22 23:33
You chose a spectacular vantage point to shoot the Pacific Ocean. The late afternoon sun creates deep shadows and shimmering light rays on the water. Now this would be very inviting, but I do remember from days as a postdoc at Berkeley, the sea is so very cold in the Pacific Northwest. How are these people wading in those waters.
Warm regards and have a good weekend,

I love that man's reflections on the wet sand!
