Detail shot from the Painted Hills of eastern Oregon. This was taken with a telephoto lens to bring a close in view of the hills. The Painted Hills are completely fenced off from the public, so there is no opportunity to get in there and walk among them, as it would destroy the hills. Since no one is allowed to walk around on the hills it's difficult to get the scale of this, but it was taken from a distance of about 600-800 meters. The hills are about 100 meters high. They are composed of a very hard type of clay, which aborbs a lot of water - so much in fact that plants can't grow there as they can't draw any water from the ground. The colours are mineral deposits of iron (red), magnesium (yellow), manganese (black), titanium (white) and other minerals in many combinations. This close in shot shows the patterns of colour like an abstract painting. The Painted Hills are located about 300km east of Portland.

Very nice light, and composition. I don't feel the lack of any scale representative is a problem at all. These hills look like they could be just about any height.

I have never seen or heard the place before going through the shots from u. Its amazing colour, the patterns look nice and u have captured the portion brilliantly.I feel sorry that human beings are not allowed there, on the contrary it preserves the virginity of the place. Great shot.

Absolutely beautiful colors! Great shot of the natural wonder..tfs :)
danielswalsh (13599) 2007-05-29 21:47
Cool shot Alvin!
Amazing mixes of colors and the lines add interesting detail to the shot. This reminds me of one of those frames filled with the multi colored sand that you turn upside down and it forms different patterns.
Well spotted Alvin,

Hi Alvin, your title is very appropriate. This is beautiful. If you hadn't told us what it was I'd have been scratching my head for a while. The colours and textures are perfect for an abstract of this nature. It sounds like a very delicate area. Its probably just as well people aren't allowed on these things or there wouldn't be a shot left for you (or any of the rest of us) to take. Very nicely captured!

This is a "wow" image for sure - great colors and remarkable clarity taken from so far away. Excellent work and thanks for sharing. Gerald

Hi Alvin. I just love these pictures of yours from the painted hills. You've got perfect repetition in the hills and of course the colors are outstanding. I love the light you had too. Beautiful shot Alvin!

The Painted Hills look really painted, very good work, unbelievable clarity considering the distance!! TFS

Hi Alvin, ow..this is a great and interesting landscape. The colours in those hills are quite amazing, and they look like a piece of soft fabric blowing in the wind. Nicely captured.
cbrman (21675) 2007-05-30 1:44

It looks like Death Valley, but here we see much more colours. Beautiful composed and exposed, those colourful layers of rocks really making the composition. Excellent framing...good work.
Gerrit (52099) 2007-05-30 4:26
The best one in the excellent series, Alvin.
What an incredible landscape.

Absoluted amazing photo, colors and curves are an ticket for the past
Nelu_Goia (3116) 2007-05-30 12:01
Yuor photo is so vivid that makes me smile:)
I guess that you are very "picky" about quality because you only upload "top-of-the-shelf- photos.
I wonder, how much time do you spend post-processing one of your "gems".
Gustaw (21670) 2007-05-30 13:01
Hi, my friend!

It's the first time I see a picture of this photogenic place.
I think the use of a zoom is a real great idea to compress the perspective.
The colors are simply fabulous.
jjbach (9324) 2007-05-30 16:05
What can I say....wonderful shot, stunning. This place is amazing!! Splendid work and excellent framing!
ilghiz (708) 2007-05-30 19:46
I wish I could gıve you a smiley for showing this Wonder of the World but I have used up my limit. Why are we looking for other planets while all of them are present on Mother-Earth...
euryan (8440) 2007-05-31 0:03
I like this composition a little bit better than "True Colors." The pattern created by the hills in the background is nicely broken by the hill coming in from the right. The color saturation and contrast are really lovely in this photo. Great natural abstract.
jhm (156536) 2007-05-31 6:13
A extraordinarily picture, this is very specially with the different colours and relief, the different diagonal lines are superb. Very well done.
dcawker (5717) 2007-05-31 9:26
Fantastic, Alvin.. Really nice & rather abstract image here. Beautiful! Regards, Doug
darrasin (2860) 2007-05-31 14:59
Very nice choice on the close crop of these interesting hills. I think the tight crop accents their lines and shapes perfectly. Perhaps it helped saturate the scene too? Thanks for the interesting note, as a thumbnail I assumed this had to be from Utah.

Nature is the best artist,or?
But you are an artist, too.Perfect POV!!!
Great lines and curves and wonderful colors.
A great shot of an unique place.
dkeus31 (27735) 2007-06-01 5:55
These colors look almost out of another world!
All these curves and lines make a great graphical subject.
erdna (5711) 2007-06-01 11:44
This is very impressive, the picture and your subject! I have never seen something like it before. I am glad the State or the Federal government is preserving it. I have seen something similar in Jordan but not as big as this and because of tourists' foot traffic, camels, horses and horse buggies it is not as effective as this. The guide says the Nabateans used the colored powder from the rocks, to color the etchings inside their caves and to color their skins.
I will try to remember this. I am still in the planning stage of driving to Vancouver end of August. I will try to pass by here. TFS.
tehanu_f (6896) 2007-06-01 16:41
An incredible view! You are so lucky to have captured something so awesome, so impressive and unusual. It looks alive as if it were a huge animal. Congrats.
banyanman (7789) 2007-06-02 2:11
Hi Alvin. Your title is apt because this does look like a semi-abstract painting. The landforms and colours are beautiful, so it is pleasing to learn of the efforts being made to preserve them. They have probably been photographed thousands of times before, but this is the first time I have seen them, so thanks for posting this together with the succinct but informative note. Your composition is excellent with the foreground slopes well positioned within the frame and providing a nice balance to the background hills. Cheers . . . David
AdamBurton (8585) 2007-06-02 11:47
These hills are incredible Alvin. You have captured them meticulously here, creating a very abstract yet natural image.
DLM (6479) 2007-06-02 12:31
This is stunning Alvin, i must visit this place one day.
capthaddock (28790) 2007-06-03 22:11
Great crop Alvin, the shapes and colours look surreal, even if the image itself is sharp, the geological features have a natural softness that make it appear as if everything here is composed of sand.
John_F_Kennedy (43757) 2007-06-04 2:33
What an impressive mountain range. It's majestic and looks like a great place to stroll.
PJE (20758) 2007-06-04 18:32

Stan (2770) 2007-06-12 5:57
Unbelievable this kind of landscape... it looks like Mars. So beautiful! Well done!
jmdaoudal (82) 2007-06-12 18:32
this one is a high level in quality.. You get the abstraction by the subject but also a real geological shot wich describe this type of place.
Compliments for the choice and for the photo.
jarek (495) 2007-06-14 7:31
I'm a great fan of American landscapes and it's national parks but have never seen such a great landscape as this one here. Great colors and great point of view. I like the composition as there's no sky left on the picture.
Thank you for sharing!
berseph (1758) 2007-06-15 22:05
What beautiful colors Alvin. The lines in the rocks are quite fascinating. Love the rolls of the landscape and how it is presented in your capture.
Silvio1953 (148547) 2007-06-16 12:42
Hi Alvin, wonderful nature painting, splendid composition with wonderful light and colors, very well done, ciao Silvio
Bruno40 (6658) 2007-06-18 6:41
Thanks to you and TE for showing me this place.
angelsimon (2466) 2007-06-19 9:46
Thanks for visiting my gallery, it has allowed me to visit yours.
I chose this one because of those wonderfull colors, I have seen more pictures from this place in TE, but your composition is special, with the repetitive structure broken by this diagonal one. You have framed it very well. Congratulations for this good work and regards from Spain.
pboehringer (770) 2007-06-23 13:34
Hi Alvin, I'm in awe looking at this painted hill shots fo you. I'm heading that way next month. Do you have any suggestions? Reading through your notes I got the impression that a zoom up to 200mm focal lenght seems to be almost mandatory. Is that right? Hmmm, I guess I will have to buy that much eralier than planned. Any other recommendations?
sebinho342 (19317) 2007-07-02 13:30
Hi "painter Alvin", i see that during free time you enjoy painting some moutain, a pleasant hobby, would love to do the same ... but where you excel is shooting the result.
Damn this is for sure the best picture of those painted hills that i've ever seen.
So beautiful, a drawing painting, i love it
lucinka (9976) 2007-07-15 11:26
Hello Alvin, this photo has appeared on front page of TE today. I've noticed that I didnt leave comment on it yet, so here it goes - fantastic landscape with amazing color scheme. I like your choice of composition with that front hill nicely framing the lower part of the picture. And never the less I am really glad that I can bring this photo to its 100th mark. Very interesting note too. Well done. Lucie
neetslip (194) 2009-10-29 11:33

In Italy we say "I'm without breath", when we see such landscapes. Your cut is very good for the composition.
paromitadey (623) 2011-11-02 22:57
Thanks for sharing this. Amazing photograph of an amazing place. Loved the way you have framed the shot and beautiful colors and truly painted.
