Photographer’s Note

Another view of the rocks on the beach in Oceanside, Oregon. This view is just on the otherside of the tunnel that was cut through Maxwell point.

From Oregon Live Website

"At the beach in Oceanside you can walk south two miles to Netarts. The other direction would be blocked at high tide by Maxwell Point if the founders of Oceanside, J.H. and H.H. Rosenberg, had not in 1926 cut a block-long tunnel through the point to what is now called Tunnel Beach.

The tunnel is still one of the most intriguing oddities of Oceanside. Obviously, it was a tunnel of love for the Rosenbergs, who went to great trouble and expense to allow the town's residents to move easily from one spectacular beach to the next.

A landslide closed the tunnel in 1979. Although storms would sluice it open from time to time, a big storm flushed it out properly in 1999. With its sharp rocks underfoot, it's still not a passage for anyone without sturdy shoes and strong ankles. And there is always the lurking knowledge that a landslide on both ends could seal it in blackness."
