Photographer’s Note
I don't have many lighthouse shots that I'm happy with. I guess I just haven't seen a whole lot of lighthouses in my travels, and when I have, the lighting hasn't been right, or the view of the lighthouse is too close, allowing only for super-wide-angle shots. I visited the Yaquina Head Light when driving up the coast of Oregon, in search of a town to live. Newport was one of the towns I considered. Despite Newport being a very nice town, it didn't make the cut and I eventually decided to live in Astoria. I'm glad I did stop in Newport for a couple of days and I'm glad I got to see the Yaquina Head Light, because it is a beautiful lighthouse in a beautiful setting. I always liked the lighting in this shot, because the sunrise light is golden and is lighting the lighthouse nicely, but the sky and the ocean seem to blend together, which I think gives the background an expansive feel. Also, if the sky and water were more contrasted, the image would be feel bisected, in my opinion. This is a beautiful spot, so visit it if you're ever passing through Oregon. In addition to the lighthouse, you'll also find an amazing cobble beach and spectacular tide pools.

Photo taken at the right time. Warm light from the low sun looks very good. I also like that there is no clearly visible horizon line - transition between sea and sky is blurred.

Stephen,
This is a nice shot of this fine lighthouse. The low angle lighting is great giving the scene nice warm colors and good definition. The off center positioning of the tower is great making for a very attractive shot. The haze causes the horizon to disappear with the water and sky seeming to melt together.

Hi Stephen,
extremely beautiful, great light. It seems a Hopper's painting. I'm glad to see similar works with a camera like mine ;)
