Photographer’s Note
This photo was taken in Old Town Newport, Oregon. On this day my family and I were on our way to whale watching off the coast of Newport,Oregon and I was delighted to come across a gentleman fisherman processing the days catch of Dungeness Crab.
Now I know there are Fisherman around the world and they all provide an invaluable service...providing the masses with delicious, mouth watering seafood. YUM..but what I don't think we truly understand is the lifestyle they live.
The fisherman works in every kind of weather and in Oregon that means it is cold, rainy and foggy for most of the time during crabbing season or most any season to tell you the truth. They have to endure restrictions on their catch in order to stay in balance with Mother Nature and to not cause any harm to their lively hood. This means their income is also restricted. They also leave their family and friends with the knowledge that anything could happen and they may not set eyes on them again. All this to bring beautiful, tasty food to our tables and to make a living to care for their own families.
I ask that the next time we go to dinner at our local grocery store or restuarant and order seafood, we stop and thank these wonderful people for the jobs they do and to wish them home safely(even if it is a silent prayer).
I spend a lot of time at the coast as you can see with the photos I post on the Trek websites. I am proud to say that the Oregon Coast is not only beautiful but that the people who live there are protective stewards. Mother Nature is what guides us to who we are. The power of the Pacific Ocean is what gives us our strength, our pride, our energy. Mother Nature guides us.
Take care!

Hello BettinaMarie. I like the dual colors of this picture. The scene is something I have seen before with my own eyes, I was born about 40 kms from the coast. The picture shows an interesting daily activity in some areas of the world. Good perspective of the worker busy cooking crabs. Thanks :-)

hey Bettina,
this is a very nice B&W with very good texture and contrast. Personally I would have cropped the bottom up to the handle of the pot just to get out the pipe and hose coming off the pot -- I find them very distracting and detrimental to the overall compostition. But its not a deal breaker ;)
take care,
steve

Nice photograph with a good POV and the BW format works well.
I would also like to see a shot with the steam risin near the man's face taken frontally.....but you may have that shot as well.
Great Job.

Hi Bettina,
The composition of the photo tells us a lot of activities during the take, the suit, the net, ropes, gloves, and the steaming pot gives it some kind of motion. I can sense the nearness of the Pacific Ocean and the seagulls' presence...
And I notice the LPG tank behind...
Great capture! Too bad, I'm allergic to crabs :> ...

Excellent Bettina.
I commend you on your tribute to these watermen...such a little understood lively hood in the States anymore.
great shot for B&W...the steam rising up adds a wonderful element to the photograph. Good tones, we see pure whites and deep blacks...Good eye and good framing.
Regards,
Chris.

I really like the honesty of this shot. Great style and use of B&W and it's the epitome of "a picture paints a thousand words". Best wishes, Paul.

Hi BettinaMarie,
I love the b&w with all the clutter of traps and pots. I can smell the salty aroma. Very nice note.

Excellent photograph! THe tight composition and the use of long focal length have combined to create an image of bustle and activity. The light through the smoke or vapor is good. Excellent tonality. Bravo! [Nice note too]

Hello Bettina,
This b&w format photo is perfect, i agree with Roberto said, the dual colours is really nice, the back ground is unusual but it has give the nice athmosphere to this picture especially the smokes. As you said on your new great intro, dont care about the point. You have so many beautiful pictures and i know you really have a great tallent of photography. Keep on shooting the picture and still post it to TE's friends if you mind.
have a great day
daniel
