Photographer’s Note

What is it that drives us to do what we do?

The creative urge is a precious gift that evolution has bestowed upon us humans. Dare I say uniquely, though some point to playfully abstract paintings by zoo elephants wielding a paint brush or the music of the blue whales.

In the laboratory of my mentor in Eugene, my friends, one of whom (DT) is depicted here, I, and many others over five decades found a nurturing nest the likes of which has few parallels. Ideas and debates flowed freely, capuccino runs in the mornings by F and M, late night stints at the laboratory...

We were lucky.

My professor has retired. In his honor we had a get together in which we all spoke, the old fashioned chalk board style, to celebrate the intellectual tradition our mentor instilled in us. There were our students too, the third generation.

It was a wonderful evening at his quiet home surrounded by rustic hills, his three curious llamas, the strumming of guitar over the darkening shadows, the sound of ping pong in his basement...just like the old days.

I upload two photos of our mentor in the workshop...just like the old days, he can mesmerize us even now with a few lines on the black board*.
