This is Multnomah Falls in the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area. The upper falls drops 542 feet and then collects at the bottom and then drops another 69 feet. It's the 4th highest falls in the U.S and the highest in Oregon. Shortly after the water hits the bottom of the falls it ends up in the Columbia River in less than a half a mile. Multnomah Falls is also Oregon’s most visited natural attraction, which is a little surprising to me with Mt. Hood being nearby as well.

Lately I've been thinking about trying another B/W and I thought this would be a good candidate with the textures on the cliff face. I was also unhappy with the colors in the color version as I couldn't get them to look quite right. B/W is still somewhat new to me so I'm open to critiques on how to make it better. Thanks.

stunning waterfall shot i like the fact you have made it b&w. it must have been a sight to behold.

This is indeed a very nice photo, Stephen! the choice for b/w works here very well. I love the silkiness of the falling water, too.

Hi Stephen
What for a wonderful W&B fall shot. Well composition. I visited some falls in USA in 2003. I like the most one is Ruby Falls waterfall 1120 feet underground in Tenessee. Best regards

Very nice vertical presentaton Stephen, so small and so huge at the same time, the view from the bridge must be awesome, nice B&W conversion, well done.

Hi Stephen... This is a classic shot of these falls. I've also been there and seen many "calender" shots of them too. It's too bad about the colors, though, as that was always one of the features here that I thought was so attractive. i'm assuming the the time of the day was the issue. Your exif says 11:15, which I assume was probably EDT, so if I remember right, this would have been heavily shaded at that time.

Stephen this is such an excellent point of view to shoot from. I love the view of the whole falls and from this angle I can see all of it. The bridge really adds a nice design to this posting too. A gorgous photo Stephen. I love it!

Stunning waterfall! I like your positioning, which shows the whole falls, with a couple of nice breaks in the visual line for the bridge and the lower pool. The choice of black & white is great, giving this an ethereal feel. I would have liked to see the contrast a little higher, as the dark areas don't look truly black. Wonderful shot!

Hola Stephen.
This is a very good B&W picture. You captured the fall from top to bottom. The bridge give a very good perspective, very good natural frame.
Well done.

This is a wonderful shot Stephen made perfect by the choice of black and white. It has a timeless quality to it in this format. What a spectacular setting and what a fine capture. Excellent tonal range and fine sharpness. The three second exposure creates the illusion we are seeing the slightly softened water falling. First rate work.

Hi Steve,
Boooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhh, another victim of B&W ;-))
Your subject is spectacular and your small aperture / long exposure combination produces very well the expected silky effect, of course there are nice contrasts but I'm not sure this view benefits from B&W... I know my personal opinion does not reflect the majority, however I'd be happy to see the color version as a WS to fully enjoy it.
Have a nice day,
Jean-Yves

Hi Stephen

A superb tonal range, in this impressive b&w. The vertical format suits perfectly. Good sharpness & lighting. I like the arched bridge.

Great shot.I like it.Good composition and point of view.Good B&W choice.I like the detail of the bridge.Good contrasts, light and sharpness.Good job!

What a sight this must have been; you can almost hear the "thunder". I like the effect of the slow shutter speed.
For advice on B&W I turn to my husband who used to use B&W film and process his own work. He always liked high contrast, so I guess seeing his work all the time, high contrast B&W is what I'm used to seeing, so you might want to try that to add a bit more oomph!
Kath

Wow Mr. Steve, This is a very nice shot of the high waterfall. Although the bridge is an artificial structure in the middle, I think it fit into the scene very well. I like a view with the bridge since it has brought a size reference, and a sense of interaction of the natural with human creations.
A very well taken picture. I am impressed with the full coverage of the entire fall, in a clear view. The long exposure has brought up the smoothness of the waterfall color.
Usually, I prefer to have a color one in comparing with a B&W picture. I think the contrast and the gray levels of the picture well suitable to a B&W picture. The B&W picture also brought the center attention to the waterfall itself.

Bonjour Stephen,
Je suis impressionnné par la hauteur de cette chute, mise en échelle par la présence de ce superbe pont.
Un excellent choix de format veetical qui colle au POV et au cadrage.
J'aurais préféré la couleur pour ce genre de composition.
Bien à toi.
Daniel.

Hej Stephen,
Very good photo of those impressive falls. I like the framing on both sides and the bridge in between. The B&w is also well chosen, good work.

Lars

Hi Steve, this place sure looks familiar :) Good idea with the b&w presentation, and I think that in this one the lonng exposure works quite nice. Two remarks on the composition from my side would be that (a) I think it wouldn't be a problem to have the falls clearly centered in the frame, not every photo needs to be offcentered just because of some "rules", and (b) it might be nice to have some clearly distinguishable persons visible on the bridge. Nice take.

Hi Stephen,
In my opinion, I think you did a good work passing it to B/W although you say the colour version doesn't like you enough. The compo is well chosen, having the waterfall a little displaced out of the center.
I like a lot to see the lines of water created by the effect of the time exposure you used. You also did very well including the whole waterfall as big as possible, having include just the precise space in the top and bottom side. The bridge helps to see the real dimensions, but with people in it would had been better. Very good work.
Best regards
Jaume

Hi Steve,
Very impressive composition from a great point of view. I like the effect of the slow shutter speed. Splendid work

PS: I would like to see the colour version too.
Regards John

These falls are impressive and your photo is showing us perfectly. The contrast of texture and colors are superb. TFS

Hi Stephen,
I like the composition and the long exposure effect but I prefer the original version.
For nature shots, I think color is better.
In my opinion, the branch doesn't disturb.
Anyway, a good shot

Hi Stephen,
I'm sorry, but I find yours WS with colours most beautiful, I enjoy this BW picture too, the excellent depth, and superb composition with the bridge in the middle. Very well done!
Best regards,
John.

Hi, Stephen!!
I don't how you got the bw version.. grayscale, I guess. I don't like this technique... I think it produces a contrast lost.
I did a workshop,hope you don´t mind.
Try next time channel mixer monochrome... and compare.
Anyway, Ilike the shot... the the original in colors, also.
Cheers!

Hi Stephen,
A well composed shot of the Falls. The leaves in the foreground really enhance and help frame the main subject. The little bridge further balances and acts as a divider, being seen with great clarity. The falls appear to have just the right amount of definition and smoothness. Did you use your N/D filter here? The original shot though was also good, but the foreground cliff suffered from some colour/clarity issues. Overall, this B&W shot is most apropos. Well captured, Steve.

Hello Stephen
Really nice,B&W fits very well here,I find the mood better this way.
I found the word that did not want to get out
it is perennial,a feeling not there on the color shot in the WS.

Hi Stephen,

Very nice composition. Good tonal values, textures and light. Good job!

very ncie shot of the waterfall, good use of the f stop, I like the fine details and the smooth water flow, well done

Hi Stephen,
An impressive shot of this spectacular fall. I wish I was there. Capturing the full length is a smart choice and I love the bridge. It allows our eyes to have a break instead of free falling down to the pool. Excellent shutter selection and a dramatic visual impact. Congratulations!! Have a nice weekend.

Hi Stephen,
In my modest opinion I like more the WS-Color version. Beautiful Waterfall in a vertical frame. Well captured and fine sharpness.

Congratulations.
Best Regards.

Hi Stephen, I like the idea of putting it in BW. A very nice composition. It has a kind of symmetry along the fall. In this particular case, I was wondering whether placing the fall in the center of the photo would have been a better view instead of decentralizing it.
