Photographer’s Note

Continuing my theme on the Deschutes River, a small series on the river in Bend.

Bend, built around a bend in the Deschutes River, has made the river its centerpiece. Parks run along much of the river. Treed with Ponderosa Pine and deciduous hardwoods, the park displays its seasonal bounty with flowering spring trees and fall color. In the winter the pines star, their branches laden with snow. Boaters float down the river and canoes paddle upstream. Children ride bicycles and people play ball with their kids, push babies and strollers and walk their dogs (carefully cleaning up after them). Fly fisherman practice barbless casts from the banks in less populated areas. On this day, the local high school was having a run in the park.
In the downtown area, the river forms a small lake known as Mirror Pond that is stocked with a pair of swans from Queen Elizabeth's royal swannery in England. Mallard ducks and Canadian Geese also enjoy the park, unfortunately, nobody picks up after the geese.
Bend's business area borders the park; galleries, restaurants, outdoor eateries, boutiques and specialty shops, housed in the old brick buildings, are all within easy walking distance. Farther from the downtown area, the Old Mill District, located on a site previously used for lumber mills continues the mix of recreation and adds an outdoor amphitheater which is used for summer concerts.
The Bend Park and Recreation District, along with the City of Bend and private land holders, is working toward implementing a community vision for an uninterrupted river trail. The trail will parallel the Deschutes River running through the heart of our community. It’s nearly completed and runs from Sun River to Tumalo state Park, about 50 miles This map shows those existing trails

hello pat,
you have used and managed the light very well. the colorful trees in the BG look very nice. for mz taste the tree needs slightly more space on the top.

Hello Patricia,
You found some deep colours here and they look just great. Bit low light enhance these colours a lot of course, but also your composition works pretty good with the tree on the right and the water in the middle section. Those deep fall colours make me jealous.

Fantastic bright colors and a good composition with this yellow tree pot of the center and the nice view at the river and the autumnal oposite shore.I like the long shadows in the foreground and the repetion in the sky with these white lines.

Hi Pat,
Love this view of both sides of the river with the foreground bathed in tranquil shadows and the opposite banks ablaze with stunning autumn colors.
The blue sky makes a stunning reflection in the clam river as it is complimented by the gold and yellow trees.

The lighting and colors are outstanding here with excellent sharpness and detail. Your composition is nice including the tree in the shot while placing it off center. The jet trails provide a nice sense of direction for the shot. The deep blue sky is great and contrast the autumn colors nicely.

Your autumn post easily recognizable that this is yours. Perfectly build POV includes many beauties. I like huge, green area alone with single tree and its attractively yellow leafs. Excellent addition of river and richest autumn color mix at next shore. Blue sky and jet trucks are must your sign there. Congratulations. Have a nice new week.

Simply wonderful lighting which has shown the beautiful array of colours in this scene. The contrasts are incredible and the composition is well presented. One of the best natural Autumn scenes I have seen this year on TE, well done!!!!!

I notice the variety in colours, from pale green to the deepest of red, lovely...
A balanced composition with fine details, all topped by the wonderful sky and the long shadows tell the story of the season!

Hi Pat,
Great looking autumn colours mixed with green lawn and blue sky. Shadows of afternoon are long, and somehow that dark line across the frame bothers me. It might be better cropped of, leaving the picture to panorama format.

Gorgeous light and glorious colours. Our autumn is a bit half hearted this year. Some trees are still green, some are turning and some have no leaves left at all. I'm pleased you left in the jet trail as it is pointing right at your main tree which you placed nicely on the right. Lovely!

WOW!! This is the fall in just one image. What well caught the beauty of the season on this landscape, with an extraordinary quality of image and a perfect brightness.
The colors are wonderful, and the game of the light and the shades increases the beauty of the composition.

Another beautiful autumn scene with very good colors and light, the presence of the tree with the river and the blue sky produces an excellent composition, your POV is good and also your frame. The long shadows tell you took this wonderful shot at the right time.

A very fine capture from Bend (I used to live in South Bend) wih those great Fall colors. The side light makes them even nore vivid and the details are sharp

the composition, the saturated colours create a very strong image, but what I like most is the contrails in the sky, they look like shooting stars :) very nice work, I like it a lot.

Beautiful palette of colours & lovely framing. I guess you should have had used a narrower aperture, maybe f - 16 or so to enhance the depth, especially on the other bank of the river. The light is excellent & the polarised blue sky offers fantastic contrast with the autumn colours. Add to that the cherry - the jet trail. Well done!
