Photographer’s Note
Since we have a dusting of new snow on our deck this morning, I'm using it as justification to post a couple of winter photos that I missed at the time. At this rate, I should get to spring when everyone else is posting summer photos. This is a view of a nearly frozen Deschutes river from our place.
Upon arrival, we climbed out of our vehicle yesterday at a nearby gas stattion. The attendant, yes they pump gas for you here in Oregon, looked bemused at our Southern California sandals and shorts.
"I was expected spring," Larry laughed.
"Oh, it WAS here," the attendant replied, "It just blew on through."
":
The mountains make a micro-climate that means it may freeze at unexpected times so only the hardiest plants survive, like the daffodils blooming around the deck. Supposedly deer don't like them either; we'll see.

Hi Pet,
great layering. The grey bushes between the white brenches and the dark silhouette provide the complete sectrum. The shadow and light are also very good.

Hello Pat,
A simple but telling photo. The contrast between the fore- and the background is great and gives depth to your picture. The "feel" of this winter day is very "palpable".
TFS & kind regards,

Hi Pat,
Beautiful winter scene, with a strong contrast between the snow illuminated by the Sun, and the trees in the shade.
The frozen bushes add a nice graphical touch, I like the effect of the photo and the sensation of cold that transmits.

Hi Pat,
Why should you do like everyone else? I like diversity (although I am publishing spring photos at this moment :-) and your photo reminds me great souvenirs of my holidays, a few weeks ago.
The sun illuminates the snow and the frozen tree, giving this one a very nice aspect.
Regards,
Marianne

Refresing photo Pat, you are right, here we are walking bound to good weather, so this is kind of gift for me. I love the frozen branches of the bush.
Take care.

Hello Pat,
Last snow must be great surprise. Your shot is very good with different colored bands on same axis. Great addition of frozen branches in the middle of white with splendid lights around it. Excellent one. Congratulations.

Hi Pat,
Lovely winter landscape with a brilliant blue sky and ice crusted shrubs. Very effective use of light bring soothing shadows to this winters eden. April in these parts has been the warmest in a long time which has us prepared for a miserable May.

I thought the time for snow was over but I got it wrong! Anyway your shot shows a beautiful landscape and I really that bush in the foreground. I hope you are getting warmer by now.

Hi Pat,
I hope it doesn't look exactly like that anymore though :)
Simple winter scene. But that's why I like it. It looks so familiar and could be Finland.
It's spring here. But it will take a while yet, before landscape gets green colour and looks nice.

The real star is not the snow but the gorgeous light on the bush in the foreground. The several layers work well in the composition. It sounds as if it's not just in Northern Europe that spring is late this year.

hi Pat,
I don't mind winter photos as long as their as nice as this one, I like a lot alternating light and dark layers. the frozen bush in the foreground looks as delicate as hand-made lace, beautiful reminder of Christmas decorations :)
take care,

ps. we encountered high mountain weather in morocco too. we managed to get into a snowstorm right before descending from the atlas mountains into scorching temperature (during the daytime) sahara :) they closed the roads behind us and supposedly did not re-open them for a couple weeks...

Hi Pat,
Beautiful photo of the dead of winter in the Oregon "high plateau" country. My two years that I attended high school in Santa Monica, CA ruined me for life when it comes to winter weather. I lived in colder climates before and I just didn't know any better. No wonder that 40 million people live in California. Anyway, a great winter scenic that would make a beauftiful Christmas card. Excellent work!

Hello Pat,
Spring also seem to be elluding Calgary for some reason. Yesterday morning I woke up to a few mm of snow and there is more on the way today. Crazy weather! I like this scene as the light give the foreground bushes a nice glow. Good perspective of this cold day but the sun always makes it a bit warmer. Thanks Pat.

Olá Pat,
Very beautiful detail of the white bush in foreground. Good use of light.

Yes, the weather is crazy. This year we almost did not get real winter in the area of Lisbon. And now in spring we got both summer and almost winter weather.

Hi Pat. You still have snow and we are having one of the longest summers I can remember. Although it is autumn we are still having 25deg C days, not that I mind ;-). Great photo. Good texture on the snow and good colours. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers, Paul.

Hello Pat,
Hopefully spring will kick in soon in your place too!
But then winter images look good then, like here as the varied light hits the frozen bush and really makes it stand out on the darker background...
A well balanced composition with a fine atmosphere!

Hi Pat
I always read your notes first before I 'actually' see your photographs. Beautifully written as always. The FG is the most beautiful part in this picture. Here we have the play of light & shadows on the snow & the frost laden shrub, lit up by the morning light, seems to glow against the BG. The different layers especially in the BG also create interest...and it's so nice seeing pictures of snow, when here, on the outside, temperatures have touched 42 C (107.6 F)!
How did your TE meet go? I saw your post from the painted Hills as well as Peter's latest. I wish we could do such meetings here. I chanced upon your thread with Henk (Floydian)& couldn't agree more with what you said "What's the point of TE if we can't learn from the critique???" Critiques (constructive ones) & seeing other's posts (for me you & Kath have been a big inspiration with both), to me, has been the best way to learn.

Hello Pat -
It is a pretty scene with wonderful light, but it's SNOW! God, I am beginning to hate that stuff. You mentioned that you had snow the week before the TE meeting the stuff seems to be hanging on forever. I hope you don't have snow when Kath is there, but there is always a chance of snow when they arrive in Colorado. Well done.
Thank you for sharing.
John
