Acoma is located west of Albuquerque,New Mexico and is the oldest occupied city in North America. It was built over 2,000 years ago high on a sandstone bluff about 370 ft above the desert floor. I have included a view of the desert in the WS. The original slide was taken on Fuji Sensia 100, scanned and converted to B&W. The table you see is full of pottery but there was no one about at this time of day hence the title. The Acoma indians still live here but they have realized the potential of opening up their "Sky City" (village actually) to tourism. For those not interested in their culture there is always the ubiquitous casino down below.

Hi, Phil -

I can't believe I got to this one before anyone else. This is a fabulous photo, and the use of B&W really emphasizes the lines and the strength of the light. Great use of diagonals and shadows.

When I visited the SW, I saw similar towns on the Hopi reservation, but no photos were allowed.

Best,
Dan

Hi Phil,
Judging by the shadows ... no wonder 'there was no one about at this time of day' ;-))
Beautiful composition. Love the distribution between areas of light and shadows.
Regards,
Maria

Hi Phil,

Love the mood, quite, sleepy town over the heavy sun. Perfect B&w with beautifull contrasts and tones.

Regards,

Flavia

Hi Phil,
I'm looking at this picture and... I'm speechless. Your black & whites definitely play in a league of their own!
WOW!!!!
Cheers,

Fulvio.

Excellent contrast and details, as well as POV.

Hi Phil,

Super low key take. It is so sharp! One of the best B&W shot in this gallery! Ansel Adams is not far! Congratulation!

Have a great day!

JF

You have really done a great job here. The b&w is perfect for this scene. Wonderful shadows and lighting. Perfect contrast. This place looks like an old western movie...were there gunshots?? The ws is also very nice. TFS

Hi Phil,
The perspective created by the line of buildings works really well, but the most striking thing is that fantastic light, everything seems to glow. I love the geometric interplay of vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines and the beautiful textures of the walls.
Excellent scan quality and B&W conversion. Everything is razor sharp and contrast is perfect.
Very nice view in the workshop too.

Hello Phil, excellent shot with great light and atmosphere and strong contrasts. Very nice in black and white. Great POV and perspective. Thanks for sharing.
Best regards,
Kostas.

Man, Phil,
what a great idea to convert to B&W. WOW! (saved that one..lol) Extraodinary contrasts and perfect. Crisp, razor sharp detail and I love those heavy shadows of that time of day. Great diagonal line going in. Dang! What a shot. Great job!! Thanks and take care,
Shelly

Hey Phil,

A very nice composition and the perfect use of B&W, wonder how it would look in sepia though. This photo features a lot of interesting elements, almost too many to mention all - it has spectacular play of light and shadows and of course the fascinating architecture, the Workshop is also very nice, you could have uploaded it as a separate photo.

Enjoy.

very eye catching contrasts, good looking composition, well done
regards
jo

Hello Phil,
A great black and white composition with excellent light and shadow contrasts. I like the long perspective along the façades and the geometrics of the windows and ladders. Very good photo work.

The extreme contrast works very well in B&W, which is no doubt why you converted it. The texture in the walls has been captured particularly well. You also composed the image well with the perspective of the street almost making a triangle. Well done

Hi Phil. Even in the B&W I can sense the intense midday sun.The tones are so strong and the light and shadows add drama to this otherwise still scene. Great effect Phil. Regards. Klaudio.

Good morning Phil. Your choice to post in black and white is very effective here. I like the long shadows and dark sky in this setting. And yes it does look like there are all sleeping inside. Nice photo Phil.

Phil,
the image is a very strong one. The conversion to B&W enhances a lot the contrast that you encountered there. The conversion is stunning and extremely well done!
Glad that you made it to the village and not the the casino ...
Peter

Hi Phil,
I have been to Toas Pueblo a very long time ago, that looks a bit like this, but closer to Santa Fe. The heavy B&W works perfect here with hard contrasting lines which brings out a certain mood. Low light with strong shadows gave you this perfect result...excellent.
Regards, Henk

Buena perspectiva de estas humildes casas. Estupendos tonos de grises y muy buenos detalles.

It's nice to see one of your BW's - quite striking! Really good contrast with the preservation of detail, you could almost reach in and touch it. Bravo, TW

A wonderful one. You have it all, an interesting set, the diagonal, the amazing light, the shadows, the deligtful light...one of your best in my opinion...the work you did with b/w is superb. A classic with style. Hope to see more like that, love it and also a most interesting place and subject...how can anybody not be interested in their culture...?

TFS this Phil,

Michèle

Hello Phil,
fantastic strong contrast image! I love the graphic that strong light and shadows created. And you showed the feeling of empty streets time very well. Great lines, shapes and details all around!
