Visiting Acoma
The Sky City Cultural Center and Haak’u Museum strive to preserve Native American traditions while providing insight into the unique history of the Acoma Pueblo Indians. Open year-round, the Cultural Center offers guided tours, Acoma pottery & Native American crafts for sale by local artisans, cultural exhibits, and a host of performances and events.
Located west of Albuquerque, the 65-mile drive to Acoma is one of New Mexico’s most scenic and historic, where you’ll experience breathtaking views and monolith rock formations like no other in the world.
The altitude is 6,460 feet above sea level, the climate is very dry and the sun shines almost every day. We recommend you drink plenty of water and wear suntan lotion. During winter the weather can be as cold as 35 degrees while in the summer it can get as hot as 95 degrees. Please dress appropriately for the season and wear comfortable walking shoes, as the tour is ¾ of a mile long.
Our spiritual leaders live on the mesa year-round so we ask that you not wear revealing clothing out of respect for them.
Sky City Pueblo Tours
Our guided tours begin with a short ride to the top of the 367-foot-high sandstone mesa to the historic pueblo village of Sky City and home of the San Esteban del Rey Mission. Tribal Members lead the walking tours sharing Acoma’s unique Native American history and culture in the type of oral presentation that our people have been passing down for many, many centuries. Considered one of the best cultural tours in New Mexico, Acoma Sky City ranks in the "top 10 great places to honor American Indian Life" --USA Today.
The tour is one hour and fifteen minutes long and covers approximately three-quarters of a mile (note: there is some uneven/rough terrain). Local artisans sell their crafts during the tour; however most do not accept credit cards or checks, we do have an ATM machine onsite for your convenience.
Check in at the Sky City Cultural Center and Haak’u Museum's admissions desk to purchase tickets and camera permits. Discounts available to Haak’u Museum Members or Friends of Sky City – simply show your membership card. Join Now
