Photographer’s Note
Small Wonders
Bisti Badlands, BLM Wilderness Area, New Mexico.
These are some small formations in the Bisti Badlands, a 55,000 acre wilderness area about 30 miles south of Farmington off Highway 371.
This area has no facilities or recognisable trails, just a sign off the highway which, after about 5 miles or so, leads to a parking area and a gate. In this respect we were lucky to meet some helpful people leaving this area just as we were arriving, and they were able to point us in the "right" direction (or at least one of them) - without which guidance we might easily have stumbled around in a fairly barren wilderness all afternoon without happening across any of Bisti's small wonders.
Regards.

Hello Colin,
Great the texture on the "rocks" and stones, very good sharpness and light. I also like the shadows and contrast.

Colin,
I'm glad you could find this place and share it with us - its exceptional! The low sun has brought out the color nicely and cast some great shadows giving the photo a lot of depth. I love the blue sky against the oranges. Nice composition, TFS

Hi Colin,
I love how the shadows play into this. I love how you have angled the rocks into the frame ..the light & the palette is wonderful .. I love the horizontal layers .. . this is really really picky but I wish I had a bit more room on the left and right .. but a truly fascinating and wondrous desert image .. thanks for sharing it.
take care,
John

Hi Colin,
This is kind of a funny image. Odd formations, but terribly interesting at the same time. I like your composition and I like how you've captured their shadows.
Nicely seen and captured,

Bonjour Colin,
vraiment bien prise sur tous les plans cette photo.
Un document géologique interessant, un des endroits les plus chauds du globe et cela se sent.
All the best.
Daniel.

This is a wonderful landscape. The colours are fantastic and the shadows very beautiful. Looks like the air is obsoletely clean, which gives a very good sky. Well done.

Hello Colin! I am glad that there are still areas on this planet without trails and that you can still discover things without busloads of tourists ... You had great light on your little treasures, truly amazing what nature has to offer. Have a great weekend, Barbara.

Hi Colin,
amazing rock formation. I like the way you shot with a strong contrast and saturation. It looks like those old velvias. Very nice POV and DOF. Great contrast between the blue and the warm colors of the rocks. Well done!

Carlos

The American west is a real geological wonderland, because of the lack of vegetation (which means you can see all of the features of the land unobstructed) and the lack of rain (which would wash away many of these features in a short time). Wonderful shapes in this, which we can see so clearly because of the great light here, and the low angle. Well done!

Hi Colin...
It's a very interesting formation and perfect point of view indeed... They look like the chimneys of elf (Peri bacalari in Turkish) in Nevsehir at Turkey... The light, the colors and the contrast between the hot and cold colors are wonderful... Also wonderful details and texture on the formations...
TFS...
Stay well..
Salim.

Hi Colin. This is a good capture of some amazing sights around in the deserts of that part of the world. I came accross a similar place in Utah, Goblin Valley State Park. The difference is that you pay to be able to see it in Utah. :)

Hello Colin
Thanks to your critique, I have found your beautiful gallery. Amazing geological formations with total lack of vegetation & in different shades of brown. You've got excellent play between the light & shadows & an amazing blue sky, almost polarised. Thanks for sharing such beautiful photographs with us
