Santuario de Chimayo was built in 1816 by Don Bernardo Abeyta the successful land owner who believed in sacred pilgrimage sites where clay dirt had healing powers.
Today over 30,000 people from all over the world make pilgrimages to Chimayo during Holy Week. Walking is traditional with some pilgrims walking as far away as Albuquergue, 90 miles (150 km).
Many visitors take a small amount of the "holy dirt" hoping for a miraculous cure, and some eat the dirt. A more common practice now, is to rub the infected body part with the clay. 25 or more tons of dirt a year has to be replenished from the nearby hillsides.

Nice framing with good light on the wooden portal. The church itself in the bg doesn't get as much sharpness as the frame, it could have used a bit more perhaps.
Lovely sandy/wooden colours and good framing are the main draws here.

A very good frame for this interesting building and a very pleasant colour coordination at the same time. Many fine details and an interesting note.

But this composition is more interesting. I like your idea to make so attractive wooden frame for this church on the background. I also like this dominating yellow color, very nice image. TFS!

a lovely rich warmth emanates from this shot. The framing is well executed and the contrast of the rich green trees against the strong orange hues gives great interest.
A nicely informative note, thanks for sharing
have a great week.

now this looks like lovely and very peaceful place and I like its simplicity very much. Very nice idea to frame the view with the wooden door frame - it goes very well with the rest of the colors in the image and adds some more depth to it. The green bits bring some contrast in color and make the composition more lively.
Thanks for sharing and all the best

Ray, I was there once back in the 90's and from your recent picture I see that this beautiful place hasn't change much...adobe architecture and a total southern color and atmosphere..I'm sure that this was a great journey to NM!! I love this State..

Very creative use of this wooden door to frame this world famous church. I remember visiting this place when I used to live in Albuquerque. I like the colors accented by the flowers. The soft lighting is very appropriate. Well done, tfs.
