Well, I didn’t have my trusty foot soldier around for this one…so the sense of scale will have to rely on your own perception of the scene. As the sun began to make its way over the ridge, I was able to catch its highlight on this balancing rock…the one of course, living on the edge. :) For music fans, that might just sound familiar too, yeah…a little Aerosmith maybe??
Although it may appear close to tipping over, this big rock is actually pretty solid…enough so that I felt comfortable walking on top of it. Perhaps not the smartest idea by the looks of it, but then again…I could have been in a photo induced haze at the time and didn’t think of my mortality. :o
And this wraps up the scenery from Red Rock Canyon. I may have a few others in the future, but for now, that’s all she wrote.
Thanks for stopping by.
On a side note, I must be as gracious in losing as I was proud in victory. We (U.S.A.) gave it a valiant effort in the World Cup, but congratulations go out to the Belgians for advancing. Best of luck to everyone left in the tournament, it’s been a wild one!

Lovely colors, shapes and textures. the composition is marvelous, too. This is a photo that should go in a brochure about this place.

Hello Jason - A collection of texture and colour Jason, and with the sunny and shaded areas well managed. The 'balanced' rock makes a very attractive focal point. Nicely seen and a landscape not dissimilar from Namibia.

Miss cricri :-)

Belgium has the quarter final achieved, this for our young team a great presentation.
I shall not wait for to write a new critique to the end of the WK.
Your rocks picture is pleasant to look at, through your playing with sun and shadows.
A nice perspective with depth and super wide image.
Excellent composition, lovely presentation.
Very well done, TFS.
Have a nice day,

J'aime bien le titre de cette composition. Convient parfaitement à l'image. On a l'impression qu'un petit coup de vent ferait dégringoler le rocher. J'aime beaucoup les traces de fer dans la pierre.

Hi Jason - I've never managed to get out to the amazing rock formations of your neck of the woods (or lack of woods?) but I'm constantly amazed by the seemingly precarious, yet actually incredibly stable, balancing acts these rocks have been pulling off for thousands of years. Here's another example - you could have convinced me you caught the beginning of a rockslide here, but instead it seems this landscape won't be changing any time soon. Incredible, and well done bringing the scene out of some tough light and shadows.

Fantastic desert rocks scenery, Jason, the light enhanced the carved outlines of the stones.
Perferct mashroom shape or maybe i should say a Sombrerro...
Good depth onto the canyon and cliff beyond.

I don't see anyone actually living here, but I understand that you wouldn't want to miss the chance to use that title ;-). It's a spectacular view in any case, regardless whether the rock is completely solid or the upper part would be loose. The scenery generally remains as mind-blowing as in the earlier photos. This must be a fascinating area for trekking.

Hi Jason, As to Aerosmith, no, thank you, it is not my cup of tea. Such rocks defying gravity are always very impressive. Sometimes they do not fell down because a Buddha's hair is under, what is here? Not nice of this soldier not standing there on the top, we have no clue to the sky. From the top of it the view must have been fantastic, but probably not for someone with vertigo. But the colours of the rocks are the most attractive here, specially in the first su rays.

a lovely composition that includes an interesting aspect of the awesome natural scenery, there are intriguing shapes and textures that make me think of stone creatures or just sculptures:) The rocks in the foreground make me think of a futuristic sphinx:) Of course the rock formations are unique and fascinating without my impressions. I like very much the diverse degrees in the intensity of light, shade and colours. I also like the sense of anticipation regarding the widening of the lit area in the foreground. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great day,
PS Congratulations on the way the USA struggled to win the match until the very last second of the extra time, admirable persistence and faith. And everyone's talking about Tim Howard today!

when ever I see a large rock or boulder sitting like this, the little KID in me kicks up and i get sudden urges to tip it over :)
I also can't help but pick up rocks and throw them into oceans, lakes, ponds...it must be a guy thing eh?
but don't worry, i'd never actually try to tip these rocks over. For one thing its against the law to do so in national parks - its just the kid inside of me :)
Like i said to you before, i loved this park but taking photos of it was a pain in the ass lol
the lighting can be so difficult.
glad to see you were able to get some blue sky at the top, adds an important color to the scene.
you should take a look at my reply to your critique of my staircase shot!

I saw the match, too!
What an epic; Dempsey must be a new American hero! I must say, I felt sad for USA and felt they deserved to progress but, there is no script!
Back to the photograph ... the light and the textures make this memorable. You have the highlighted, 'balancing' rock really well positioned in the frame and its change of colour highlights it, to the point, that it becomes the head and chest of a gigantic animal!
The light really is gorgeous!
Have a good day,

Good frame quality of the view with a good balance between lights and shades
Waylim (25368) 2014-07-10 17:29
Like some people, this rock do live on the edge and there are many other good example in many of the Utah and Arizona National and State Parks. You did a good job handling the light and shadow here. I know it is not easy. I messed up a few shots when the light is like this. Love the fait glow on the balanced rock.
I was in Valley of the Fire but was never at teh Red Rock Canyon, perhaps next time I'm in Vegas I should consider it.
Gigidusud (18065) 2014-07-11 14:18

You choose right moment of light to show this balancing rock. The rock is made with many different brown and white layers like a piece of fancy-cake. The photo has nice composition, colors, light and sharpness.

Another nice shot of this fantastic place! I like these rocks a lot, and here you captured the sun light on this rock in foreground with a curious shape. Good moment!
berek (43639) 2014-10-09 22:46
able to simulate these rocks into different shapes.
I like the title of this picture. rocks look beuatiful with this light.take care.
