Kootenai Falls
Located on the Kootenai River between the towns of Libby and Troy, Montana, the river drops 300 feet in just a few hundred yards. The surrounding rock formations vary from step to gently sloping and provide an unusual opportunity to view the falls from below, beside and above in just a few steps. The formations have a variety of colors from buff to light blue and I’m pretty sure they are composed of mudstone. The mudstone has preserved the texture of ancient ripples.
Each season at Kootenai Falls provides a variety of interest. Spring has two water levels, low and high. Low occurs while the high mountains are frozen with snow. High comes with the thaw and levels surge with snow melt. Summer has low water levels and many people play in the water. The sloping rocks create isolated pools as well as flowing water for swimming. Fall and winter highlight the unique rock formations with snow and frost.
