Photographer’s Note

Two snowboarders sit back, relax and and take in the view on the chairlift at Big Mountain, Whitefish, Montana.

We were lucky to ski above the cloud on this day which was cool. The temperature inversion means that the cool cloud is stuck in the valley, trapped by the warmer air above it. This means that those higher up the mountain enjoy the sunshine, warmth (and spectacular views), and those lower down are stuck in a freezing cold cloud in low visibility all day. Skiing down into the cloud at speed is rather exhilarating(!).
