The Great Plains of the United States are undergoing another change. The ongoing drought, combined with the changes in farming technologies and the resulting economic chages are driving families off their farms. Since the local towns rely on these farmers, the towns are also declining. I recently read a quote that says "when you lose the schools, you've lost the town".
This small town of Enid is a ghost town by all measures, but it appears that one family keeps the name alive and perhaps the last business. All else that is left of this old town is the school, what looks like a few deserted buildings and homes and a freshly painted sign welcoming visitors.

the contrast between the colorful area, and the abandoned school is so powerful, really interesting shoot, one you take few moments to think of...

Nice colors and good composition. I like the shadow made by the clouds in the horizon

I like your framing, with the building facing the rest of the picture. I wonder what that ladder is doing on the roof?! The bright colours and lighting give this picture a big green smiley!

Wonderful picture!! It's such a beautiful, wild place yet I feel so lonely when I look at it. I would love to sit inside the school and listen to the walls talk about the stories of the past that took place there. I love this period of time and would jump at the chance to experience it. Your photo captures the nastalgia, lonliness and quiet beauty so well. I, too, wonder about that ladder on the roof. It seems ready to slip at the slightest breeze. Very well done, Ned!!

Beautiful shot. The vastness of the space is really captured well. THe lonely, abandoned, schoolhouse really seems to fit in to the landscape. It's very present but at the same time it has the feeling of being lost in such a sea of land that echoes your note. The textures here are superb and the colors nice, muted and soft, yet strong. Very impressive. Great job.

Hi Ned, great capture of this abandoned building, it looks so strange in the vastness of those rolling Montana hills. Colors are nice and mild. Nice detail, that stupid ladder on the roof.

Fantastic composition. The wide open spaces are captured nicely and the DOF gives a 3-D feel. The school house has lots of character and tells a tale of children having to travel some distance to learn thier lessons. Well done.

Alone and abandoned. So mark contrast with the plains out back.Imagined, years ago kids were running around but now, only the winds of silence is walking among the hills and trees. The people must have left without thinking much. They even forgot to take down the ladder.

Melancolic picture, Ned... Something similar happen in Spain and we have now many deserted villages. Pitty. Congratulations for the photo from Madrid.

Thew light is nice. The composition is efficient to show that abandonned house in the middle of nowhere. The landscape is amazing too.

I like the composition and colours of this shot, with the schoohouse, the mountains in the background, the dry grass, etc. But most of all, I like the rustic feel, and the real sense of this being a ghost town that is present in the picture. And thanks also for the interesting note.

This looks like it was a grand school house in its day. I like abandoned buildings of the plains, so I'm finding your themes and photos interesting. These photos really strike me, you can see the hope these people from another time had about their lives and future, which is now our past...

Hello Ned……..are you still out there?
Yes it is ten years on since you submitted this, but there it was when I connected to Trekearth, and I just love it, and a lot of your other work too.
Great photo and story.
