Outsiders probably believe that all Idahoan are Republicans, or at least that people who don't agree with the Republicans lead a quiet, subdued existence. Not so! The people here of all belief systems are strong and creative about expressing themselves.
There is no question that the Republicans still dominate the political scene in Idaho, though less so in Pocatello because of the university. The state's Republican tendencies seem almost a matter of faith in that political party, rather than a matter of belief in certain issues. As one progressive person put it, they'd vote for the Devil himself if he were to run with an "(R)" behind his name!
Note also that the Democratic Party is just another political party, and nothing more than that. I remember the striking incident where Hillary Clinton, as a New York senator, tried to put her state's nuclear waste in Idaho. Our state's Mike Simpson, a conservative Republican, rose to the occasion and defended our state against New York's poop! Maybe Hillary just thought that she didn't need votes from Idaho anyway, so she might as well send her stupid stuff here. Wouldn't it be a great shame if the choices for president in 2008 were Hillary, some Republican, and a few candidates from minor political parties who wouldn't be elected anyway? Let's hope for somebody better that that.
