The Power of Teamwork

This unnamed waterfall is in the vicinity of Kalihiwai Falls just outside of the town of Kilauea on the Hawaiian island of Kauai.

I realize the photo has some issues such as the blur of the vegetation on the left due to wind during a long exposure. But since these un-enhanced greens are representative of Kauai, I really want to share them with you.

In some ways, beautiful waterfalls are a dime a dozen in Kauai. You can't travel too far without going past one or seeing one in distance somewhere. What was interesting about this one was it's lack of access. When you're driving on Highway 56 outside of Kilauea you might see this waterfall out of the corner of your eye as you whiz by it. But since there's no parking or shoulder to stop in and it is a high speed road you can't stop. The nearest place to stop either before or after the fall is about 2 miles each way. As a result, I'd guess there aren't too many photos of this particular fall.

So this is where the teamwork part comes in. My wife was indespensible in getting this one as she dropped me off at the fall when it was safe and went on to shop at a fruit stand down the road. When she was finished she came back to pick me up. Of course I wasn't finished when she returned, the requested 15 minutes to take the photographs is never enough. But any shot is always better than no shot.

About the photo: I used a circ poplarizer and a 2 stop graduated color filter to even out the exposure. The upper part of the fall was in much brighter light than the lower part and you can see some of that bright light breaking through the trees at the top. In this case the transition area was not directly in the middle of scene which is fine when you're using the Coking system since you can slide the transition area up and down in the frame.

Regards,
Doug

The waterfall got a philosophical meaning after I read your note. This double waterfall looks rather like a double water climb, or ghost climb: one giving a shoulder support to the other...

Excellent placement of the falls and the long exposure works very well here. The blurred leaves don't bother me. The greenery, as you say, are nicely saturated and evenly handled for lighting. Well done Douglas.

Hi Darrin,
You have magically transported me back to Kauai; that light through the green is so classic. Nice note about teamwork too. Speaking of teamwork, that paternity leave must be over.

Hello Doug,

Interesting story behind this image. I would love to visit this island to see this beautiful places. The waterfall would perhaps look great frozen. I bet it would make an excellent short ice climb. Nice colours and the blur is not a big problem. Thanks Doug :-)

Hi Doug. Worth the effort! There’s a lot to be said for teamwork. Great photo. The really vibrant colours and silky waterfall show your wise use of filters. Nice capture and thanks for sharing.
Cheers, Paul.

Nice waterfall shot! The soft flowing lines of the waterfall are beautiful, and I really like the way the plants around the outside act as a natural frame for the waterfall. Great colour too. Nicely done!

Doug,
team work is essential when you're aiming for perfect shots and your little story around this image is a perfect example for that. The movement of the green is not a flaw. I see it as a bonus! You should look into William Neill's most recent work to realize that this blurr is exactly his newest technique to have some impressionistic art work in his vast collection.

Hi Douglas,
Well glad you had the ol Teamwork going to get this shot, I love waterfalls, the sound , the smell, You've got a good shot here, TFS

Hi Doug,
Yes, any shot is always better than no shot. That's great that you did it, so that we can appreciate it. The greens stand out indeed.

Hi Douglas
You forgot to mention in your title:...and the "knowhow of photographer" for the subtle composition and the fine head of white hair!
Cheers.

That's a good tip about the grad on a waterfall as they are often brigher at the top. I use my grad a lot but never on a waterfall, so I'll remember that. Those greens are gorgeous and the blur isn't an issue. Just the other day I had the same problem. In the UK it is rarely NOT windy. The 1/4 second is perfect for the water blur. Well done

Hi Douglas,
A picture of paradise?!... Great pov, gorgeous colors, absolutely beautiful.
I would never tell that the light was so challenging by looking at it, as the exposure is perfect and the sharpness is very reasonable (actually the subject doesn't require more than it has).
Regards, José.

A classic pic,excellent colors !
