Photographer’s Note
Begining in 1978 my wife and I started visiting this bay after finding it while hiking along the coast of the Big Island.
Kiholo Bay is located approximetly 3/4 of a mile from the main highway it's isolation offered a beach to our selves - indeed we spent many days on this beach without seeing another person.
Historically the bay was used by the Hawaiian Royalty. Located about 1/2 mile to the left of the photo and over lava flows is beautiful Luahinewai pond which is a fresh water pond surrounded by coconut palm trees. Off is the distance in the photo is Wainanalii lagoon which is an important feeding and sleeping site for green sea turtles.
Unfortunatly, wealthy people have found out about this lovely spot. In the 1990's a large home was built on the very spot I shot this photograph. There are at least two houses overlooking the fresh water pond.
I shot this photo in November 1979 using a Nikon F with 35mm lens and Kodachrome film with a polariser filter. Hyperfocusing for max depth of field. Tripod.
I wanted to share this photo as one that can no longer be reproduced due to "progress".
Scanned using a Nikon Super Coolscan 8000 at 4,000 dpi. and edited in Photoshop. Colorcorrected and sharpened.

An amazingly beautiful place, and a sad yet common story... Very well composed, and it was nice of the clods to cooperate...;)
Would be interesting to see the current version (as a workshop, for instance).

Very effect use of polarising, and rather sad note. Primarily though, just superb compo. Added to theme.

Amazing seascape with that huge and impressive sky! I like a lot the filter, really adds the age mood to the composition. And the dead tree is a good reference to your title..
Well done!

Hello John, the landscape and the composition are impressive. I also like a lot the high contrast of the picture colours.
Regards,
Javier
