Photographer’s Note

Pu`uhonua National Historic Park is known as the Place of Refuge, where up until the early 1900"s, Hawaiians who broke kapu (laws)could avoid death by fleeing to this place of reuge or 'pu`uhonua.' A priest would absolve the refugee of his sins, including defeated warriors fleeing from battle.

Inside the historic grounds are enclosures and burial areas for powerful chiefs. The rocky outlines of their homes remain, as well as several reconstructed temple and home buildings. This is one of the most sacred places in the Hawaiian Islands.
