Akaka Falls, The Big Island, Hawai'i. About 18-miles north of Hilo.

A 442-foot (134.7m) plunge from the top to the pool. There is a legend that goes with the fall - it says that the god Akaka, fleeing across the canyon after his wife returned home unexpectedly and discovered his infidelity, slipped and fell off the fall. The fall is in a State Park that has some very nice paved hiking trails through the jungle. There are several other falls within the park that are not as dramatic as Akaka. During the blooming season the jungle is a profusion of colors and smells. When my wife and I were here very little was blooming and it was trying to rain.

Hello John,

I like this shot even better than your previous photo of this remarkable falls. A forty-story drop for that water into a pool! I like very much your succinct but engaging note. The vantage point for the photo is well chosen, and of course a vertical configuration is the only way to shoot this place. The composition and colors are vivid.

Warm regards,

Bulent

nice composition and great subject. nice water smoothness. i'd increase contrast a bit to get rid of some of the haze.

Hi John

Beautiful greens. Stunning Falls. All amplified by this wonderful point of view and composition.

wonderful image.

take care,

John

Hi John
Very good framing for this shot. Just the good aperture time for goof waterfall rendering. Just amazing.
Cheers
JP

This is an impressive water fall. And everything is si green around it that it appears they do not have the same draught problem as we are experiencing in Australia. I like your vertical composition. Well done.

Hi John,
Beautiful watefall here. I like the many the greentones in this photo but they seem to be a bit flat even though it was very cloudy. Good length in your photo covering the entire waterfall and a little more. TFS.

Hi John,

Amazing waterfalls! I like the way you framed it, with no sky in the shot. Good POV and nice composition. Interesting note as well.
Nice job!
Quentin.

What a fanrastic POV you must have had to get the whole of this fall into the frame. It also looks like vertigo could be a problem. Good off-centre framing and choice of shutter speed.

Hi John,
Wow that's a high one. And the place looks like a well, quite upright. Very green scene, so much so that it works as a special effect.

Hi John:

Lovely shot and interesting note. I wish there were some way to show the scale of the fall, as I wouldn't have guessed it was over 200 feet, let alone 400. Well done all around though. Thanks for sharing.

WOW!!! As you already know, I have to see at least one waterfall a day. This one fills the cup completely. Wonderful, luxious green framing this thin thread of water that takes the whole frame from the very top to the very bottom. Great inclusion of some foliage as foreground in the lower bottom. Without that it would be a flat and boring picture.

I've never been to Hawaii, but if I do, this is one of the places I will visit. What a spectacular view, was this from a near by trail? From the air?... realy great composition, colors awsome.. what can I pick on?...

Hi John,
I love this shot of Akaka Falls. You have shown the splendid drop well. I like the detail of the water particularly as it enters the water. Smart to frame it without the grey sky. The FG flower really adds to the DOF.

BTW: I posted the changes your suggested to my pink sunrise, It really worked well. It's the fiorst time I've use a mask like that and it was really easy. I was so entranced, I tried it on several other photos but they didn't open up like that one. Thank you so much!!
