Waikiki Beach area of Honolulu, Hawai'i

The postcard image of Waikiki Beach. My wife and climbed to the top of Diamond Head to capture this image. A walk for those who want a different view of Hawai'i and are willing to put out a little extra effort. To get to the top is quit a hike but once you have made it the view was worth the effort. It is only a 1.5-mile walk. You are mislead by the first half mile as you are walking on a nice wide paved path. But, trail narrows and up you go - not very steep as you go into and out of the ravines but always going upward. About 1.25-miles you hit the first set up steps - very steep and about 75 steps to enter a paved tunnel. It is nice and cool in the tunnel and there is a steady breeze blowing - about 150 yards in the tunnel. Then there are another set of stairs just as steep and maybe even steeper than the last set. 100+ steps to the top and another tunnel. The tunnel leads you into an old WWII cement observation post. Just like the ones we have all seen in the John Wayne war movies. You are still not at the top. After crawling out of the observation post there is a short but steep path to the top. Hang on to your baseball cap because it is windy.

Once on top you have a panorama of the ocean, Honolulu and the mountains, and the east coast of O'ahu. While on the top my wife discovered a baseball hat graveyard off to the left of my camera position. I had my hat on backward and still the wind tried to take it away from me.

Below is Waikiki and the pink hotel on the beach is The Royal Hawaiian. The pink building in the far background on the slopes of the mountains is the Tripler Army Medical Center. Pearl Harbor is behind the twin towers in the near background stretching back toward Tripler.

Serwus John !
Fabullous vista from a high point to judge the location of the city. You had a perfect weather - in photographic sense. Spectacular clouds added a nice game of light and shadow to the scenery and matched the tall buildings. The result of the strong wind is clearly visible on the sea.
Really well done.
Be well,
M.

Nice view John. Like you said, definately postcard-like. The colors and sharpness are nice. Haven't been there, but I am amazed by how white and monotone the buildings are.

Hi John,
Always splendid point of view in your gallery, here still the sight is splendid.
Very good framing and very good sharpness, very nice perspective of these buldings.
Very good shot and thank you for the good note.
Best regards,
Patrick

Hi John
Nice perspective on the bay and the beach. Incredible contrast between the sea and the urban forest. Beautifull light also.
Excellent work

Hi John,
A very nice postcard, indeed. A clever and neat pov. I guess that the weather wasn't perfect for photos, but that didn't stop you from getting a great photo.
By looking at your portfolio, I know that you like low contrast and I have nothing against it, mainly because it's the only way to maximise the definition, but perhaps on this one it would be nice to have a bit more.
Regards, José.

Definitely a postcard setting. Love the high vantage point you've captured. Well done.

Good perspective and nice light for this interesting shot.
Best regards

Excellent shot from Diamond Head. Well worth the climb to this viewpoint. It seems to be a pleasant light allowing you to pick out plenty of detail. Nice and sharp.

Hi John,

Excellent POV, colors, contrast and light are good. Agian the charged sky added a punch to the shot. I like the contrast betwen the green, the blue oceand the the urbain white. The composition is well balanced.

Best Regards,

Flavia

Hi John,

Wonderful image.

I love the peaceful meditative sense you get even looking at the bustling city ,, it can't overwhelm the infinite sea and sky .. and the color palette helps the effect of peacefulness as well.

beautiful.

take care,

John

Hi John!
Good shot of the city with great depth. The quantity of nice green vegetation in the foreground is good for the composition, and I like the soft colors.

Hi John,
A clean crisp shot with good clarity of detail. This gives the viewer a sweeping view and I like the way the different layers of interest blend together. My one suggestion is that a grad tint in PP would give you some extra contrast in the sky, but that is a personal preference. As it is, the photo is exceptionally smooth and clean. A very fine capture.
John

Hello John,

Wonderfully clean and crisp shot of Honolulu. The composition and colors are exquisite. I remember driving to a spot called Pele, where the wind was so strong that the asphalt was worn down in places. You had to lean at 45° into the wind just to stand up. Is that anywhere near Diamond Head?

Your note is highly informative and befitting this excellent photo.

Hello John!
Amazing panorama of the city and beach!
Perfect details and light!
Congratulations!
Best regards!

Hi John,
Beautiful photo of this famous waterfront and a fabulous POV! Gorgeous clouds and light management. By the way I think that your outstanding photo of the sandhill crane was wasted on Trek Nature (I have a TN account but I can't remember my user ID and my password). I think that your bird photos would fare much better on Trek Earth (IMO). Fantastic shot!
